Magong, Penghu, Taiwan. A small hotel. Hitomi had been invited to the islands by one of her former classmates for a karate exhibiton, but Kasumi had been waiting for her in her hotel room, and Hitomi had no desire to fight her again, not because she did not expect to defeat her, but because Ein – no, because Hayate – had been her brother. Despite that, Hitomi had to take a deep breath to release the tension in her muscles before gesturing to Kasumi to have a seat and explain why she had reappeared.
"I never did thank you for taking care of Hayate," Kasumi said, resting her hands on her knees, "and I have come here to do that, but I have also come here to tell you that there are others searching for you because of him. Our clan has too many enemies." A short pause. "Except you have already started meeting them, have you not? They always come at night, and they are always ready to stand and fight you, no?" She only seemed exhausted, not at all like she had any intention of causing harm.
"I've had some close calls," Hitomi admitted, "but, so far, it hasn't been anything I can't handle." She did not like that she had already become accustomed to the idea of random assailants dropping into her life on a regular basis, but that had been the way of things since she had signed up for the tournaments. "If you're offering to protect me, there's no need, and –" She studied the face of the kunoichi before her, trying to see through the practiced neutrality there. "– I'm sure there are other places you'd rather be." Hayate had been a good friend, but Kasumi, as his sister, belonged by his side.
"I cannot go back," Kasumi replied, sounding as if she had said the same thing many times before, "and the fact is that those others have been testing you. There will come a time that they try to take you." She averted her eyes for second, as if keeping herself from shivering. "I have been kidnapped before, and no one else needs to go through that, especially you." She looked at Hitomi again, her gaze acquiring a hard edge. "You have seen many things, up to this point, but you have not become involved in the events that underpin everything, as so many of us have. I hope to keep you from that."
"Except I already have." Hitomi did not like the condescending tone the kunoichi had adopted. "Because I protected your brother, even though I didn't know who he really was, and that means I'm a part of your family drama, whether I want it or not." That made Kasumi flinch, and Hitomi followed up on it. "I didn't ask for that, but –" No sense concealing her anger. "– that's what it's going to be, isn't it? You're lucky I'm a caring person, or I'd be really upset with you." She shook her head. "You probably went through all kinds of trouble to get here, huh? I'm sorry to waste your time."
Kasumi shrugged. "A place is a place. The name might change, but it is still only a place." She sighed. "And this is not a waste, Hitomi. It is because you care that I am here, and it is because I care in return that I am trying to protect you. I did not mean for you to become involved in this, but, now that you are, I am responsible for it." The hard edge remained in her eyes, but, more and more, she only seemed ... tired. "Accept my company for a little while. Learn from me, as you learned from my brother."
"I'm not going to turn you down," Hitomi replied, a hollow feeling settling into her chest as she realized how hard Kasumi must have been working to try keeping her façade in place, "not only because of Hayate, but because ... I know you're a good person, and you mean well." A puff of breath, blowing her bangs away from her eyes. "Even if you can be really frustrating sometimes, I don't think we're so different. I remember, on Zack Island, there were times when it even looked like you were having fun." She softened. "I think that's probably who you really are in your heart, underneath all the drama."
"I have no idea if that is true or not," Kasumi said, "but I am trying to get back to that." A long pause before she added, "May I stay here tonight? One of the reasons I came to see you here, instead of in public, is because I know my pursuers are keeping their distance for now." She dropped her neutrality to let Hitomi see all the weariness underneath it. "And, believe it or not, it would be nice to sleep in a real bed after all this time. It would be nice ... just to sleep, period." How many days had it been since – ? Hitomi could not imagine that level of self-discipline ... and self-deprivation.
"All right," Hitomi said, "I'll even share some of the bubble bath. Just don't use the whole bottle. And –" To her surprise, Kasumi rose to her feet and gave her a hug. And she hugged her back. "Okay, okay. Needy little thing." They separated. "I remember what Ayane said about you, one time. Called you a princess." A rueful smile. "I'm starting to see why that fits, but I'll get over it. Just ... talk to me like an equal, okay? If you're going to be my guardian or whatever, that's a good place to start."
Kasumi nodded and offered her hand. Hitomi, after taking it and nodding in return, felt a deep sense of comfort in having her around from then on.
END.
