[florence lyrics #1] (mahou shoujo madoka magica, homura/madoka)
Title: and from it, she fled
Fandom: mahou shoujo madoka magica
Pairing: homura akemi/madoka kaname
Rating: g
Prompt: #1: "she killed it with kisses and from it, she fled"
Word Count: 318
Summary: madoka and homura meet for the last time
spoilers for the ending of madoka magica! not loving how this turned out, but i spent a decent chunk of time on it, so why not post it anyway?
when homura wakes up, she can't feel the ground under her feet. it feels like swimming without the water, and yet somehow, she's still drowning. stars swirl and shift around her, melting into one big greyish blur through her clouded vision.
"homura? can you hear me?"
a sudden warmth soothes her aching limbs. homura looks up, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "madoka."
madoka smiles. her hair is still tied up with red ribbons, and a white dress covers her small frame.
she looks beautiful.
she looks ethereal.
realisation hits homura like a punch in the gut. her breaths are fast as she tries to run, but her body doesn't move. "madoka!" she cries out, voice raising slightly. "madoka, don't leave!"
madoka smiles, and homura's not sure if it's out of pity or affection. "i understand everything now. i know how hard you tried to keep me safe, homura. i know how many lives you've lived."
madoka steps forward and hugs her. she's so warm and soft, and homura's chest aches in an odd, bittersweet way.
"it's not like i'll be gone, you know," madoka chides, "i'll be watching you from up here."
that doesn't make homura feel any better. she sobs a little as madoka pulls away from the hug.
madoka smiles sadly, before continuing. "i'm guessing you must be feeling a little silly for making that wish, huh?"
homura thinks for a moment. "no."
madoka listens quietly. homura takes a second to recollect herself before continuing.
"i really liked the time we spent together, madoka. even if you're not here anymore, i want to keep fighting for you." she takes a deep breath. "because i love you."
madoka beams wide. her arms circle around homura's waist again. "thank you for everything, homura. thank you so much."
and then she leans forward and plants a kiss on homura's cheek.

This was lovely and heart-wrenching.

(If this had been the canon ending I'd actually feel the sequel movie was unnecessary. But since it wasn't, I think it was just a matter of time until Homura broke down.)

as much as i love this anime, the ending definitely did bug me ever so slightly. during the writing of this fic, i figured out why: there wasn't enough closure to it. homura went through hell for who knows how long just for madoka's safety, and after madoka makes her wish and disappears from the earth, homura just continues, demeanor seemingly unchanged. even if it was setting up a sequel, it doesn't feel like she learned anything. i want to change that.
i want to give homura the ending she deserved. i want to give her better character motivation and development. so while i don't think this is my best work writing-wise, it did help me learn something, and i'm grateful for that. :)
