* * * *
Riko had learned to expect the question, had rehearsed her response to it. No. She had no intention of joining the club. Chika asked her the same question ninety-nine times, but Riko refused to change her answer, not because she had no interest in the idea, not because she had no desire to help Chika realize her dream, but because she and Chika apparently interpreted their conversation by the sea in two very different ways.
Chika thought that she had discovered the perfect addition to her yet-to-be team. Riko thought that she had discovered the person she wished to be her girlfriend.
Ask me one more time, Riko thought, standing alone on the roof of the high school after class concluded for the day, but ask me a different question. I will say yes to you.
As expected, Chika appeared, bursting through the door, all smiles, but she did not have her arms full of School Idol Club fliers, and she did not open her mouth as soon as she spotted Riko. Instead, she paused, still smiling, but also thinking, collecting herself.
"Sakurauchi-san," she said, taking a deep breath, "I'm sorry. I know I've been going about this all wrong, so –" She shook her head. "– I apologize for pressuring you. After everything we talked about the other day, I didn't stop to ask you how you really felt." She walked up to Riko. "So, this, uh, this is ... your chance to tell me. I mean it."
"Takami-san," Riko replied softly, "you didn't ask me a question."
"I guess I didn't, huh?" Chika at least had the grace to look a little shame-faced. "I guess I'd better, then." Another deep breath. "Sakurauchi Riko, I know we've only just met, but, uh, I'd like to, uh –" A sheepish smile. "– do you wanna go out with me?"
"Yes," Riko said, her cheeks turning pink as she returned the smile. "Honestly, I thought that's what you really wanted to ask me the day after we met." She averted her eyes. "I don't really believe in love at first sight, or anything like that, so let's not call it that. Let's just say ... I had a good feeling. Because I did." She looked back at Chika. "And I've never had a girlfriend before, Chika-chan, so let's not ... rush into anything. All right?"
"Okay!" Chika still had a big grin on her face. "But don't be surprised if I still ask you to join the club, okay? I mean, not today. But later. Eventually. You know I can't give up."
"I know," Riko admitted, "so, between those times when you have to ask me to join, let's just ... be girlfriends, be ourselves. All right?" Chika nodded. "This is still a new school for me, and I'm putting a lot of trust in you. Don't be surprised if this all takes some work." She blushed again. "Hey, Chika-chan. Can I get you to come over here?"
"Mm-hmm!" Chika soon stood almost nose-to-nose with Riko.
"I could ... kiss you," Riko said, her blush going from pink to red, "but ... let's just hold hands for now." And Chika obliged, snatching up both of her hands in a flash.
"I'll win you over," Chika said, winking, her lips close enough to almost taste, "and not just for the School Idol Club. You'll see." Her eyes held countless promises.
"I know," Riko replied. Around them, the breeze picked up, chilly enough to remind them of exactly where they were. "Want to walk home with me?"
"Any day," Chika said, "so let's go."
And the next time Chika asked Riko to join the School Idol Club, Riko said yes. She still had a clear memory of her failure – in her eyes – as a pianist, but she had a companion by her side that she had not had during that ordeal, and that made all the difference.
END.
