[Challenge #370/358] "We All Want to be Loved; We All Want to Feel Accepted" (Bratz)
Title: We All Want to be Loved; We All Want to Feel Accepted
Fandom: Bratz
Pairing: Roxxi x Nevra
Rating: G
Prompt: #370: Remainder & #358: Pride
Language: English
Word Count: 900
Content Notes: Nothing. Also, the title is from a quote by Hayley Kiyoko.
Author Notes: As soon as I saw that it was a remainder prompt again, I just knew I had to write something for #358. Decided to choose Bratz since knowing that a doll franchise I loved as a child said: “#GayRights” was so great. A shame I only found out about the Nevra and Roxxi thing a couple of months ago lol.
Summary: Three snippets: Nevra’s first pride, Roxxi’s first pride, and then their first pride together as a couple (with some of the other Bratz there as support, because you cannot tell me the main four and the rest of them wouldn’t be amazing straight allies).
I.
THERE WAS ONLY ONE TIME NEVRA EVER WENT to a pride parade prior to coming out, and she can’t even claim it as something she “went” to as much as she could say she just happened to walk by it.
She was about nine years old and was being babysat by an elderly neighbor, who took her to a park. It just so happened that day was the same day as Stilesville’s pride parade.
The woman who was taking care of her...she may have been good at watching over her, but she had a very outdated mindset. She quickly took Nevra off the swingset she was on and began to walk her home.
To this day, Nevra still remembers the words her neighbor used to describe the many happy people that were flying color flags and banners around:
“They don’t need to shove it in our faces that they’re homosexuals. Why do they think us straight people don’t go around?”
Nevra didn’t realize she was bisexual yet—that would happen in middle school—and she didn’t know much about the LGBT community, but she knew that the people in the parade were just having fun. What was up with Mrs. Marwood?
Stilesville’s parade participants did nothing wrong, and seeing them be talked down to like that made the brown-haired girl very mad at her neighbor.
With a brave face, little Nevra told her babysitter, “You don’t have meanies making fun of you like you’re a meanie to them.”
Mrs. Marwood gasped but said nothing, quiet for the rest of the walk home. She didn’t babysit Nevra for another five months.
(When Nevra told Roxxi the story years later, the redhead joked that they should change her nickname to “Killer B”).
II.
Pink. Yellow. Blue.
These were the colors of the first flag belonging to the LGBT community that Roxxi ever saw, at her first ever visit to the Stilesville Pride Parade.
Phoebe and her were eight years old and were brought to the event by their mom to support one of their mom’s older sisters who was pansexual and married to the coolest butch ever.
There were flags related to sexuality. Flags related to gender. Rainbow-themed jewelry and outfits. Ladies kissing ladies and men kissing men. Beautiful models and dancers in festive gowns on top of floats.
It was the first time Roxxi saw such a diverse and happy sense of joy besides the shopping districts of Stilesville, and it was a memory dear to her heart.
It was also the first time Roxxi saw a girl she liked: she had strawberry blonde hair, dark green eyes, and freckles all over her face, and the girl looked like she couldn’t be more than one or two years older than Roxxi.
Roxxi never got to know her name or speak much with the girl, but Roxxi will never forget how the girl told her that she would look great with red hair.
The day after, the brunette asked her mother for hair dye products and dyed her hair red behind her back when she didn’t allow her to, happy even when she got grounded for a few weeks.
(When Roxxi told Nevra the story years later, the green-eyed beauty joked that they should change her nickname to “Sweet & Spice”).
III.
“Say pride!”
Nevra blew a kiss on the phone taking photos of her as Roxxi gave a literal kiss to the slightly shorter girl’s cheeks. In each girl’s hands were signs such as “Ugh, I can’t even think straight!” and “QUEER & unapologetic”.
Phoebe walked closer to the duo and showed them the photos she took. “You guys look adorable! I’m definitely posting this on Roxxi's Instagram. What hashtags do I have to use again?”
“#PrideMonth, #Lesbian, #Bisexual, #LGBT, #StilesvilePrideParade, #PrideParade, and #LoveWins,” Roxxi told her twin. Phoebe was always a nice girl, but it was still nonetheless reassuring how much of a great ally she was when it came to the LGBT community.
“You should also add #OutandProud,” Nevra added, “and maybe #Can’tStopTheseGirls."
Phoebe nodded and went to work right away. After a few seconds, she gave Roxi’s phone back to her.
“Done! I’m going to go and talk with Dylan and Meygan now. Have fun, you two!”
As Phoebe walked away, Roxxi wrapped an arm around Nevra. “This has been a great first pride parade together. Also great that our friends have our back, too.”
Nevra hummed in agreement and looked around. Chloe and Jade were not so far away, conversing with a drag queen, no doubt complimenting the absolutely stunning red gown they were wearing. Sasha was at the DJ Booth at the park across the street, aiding a hand in playing tunes by Hayley Kiyoko and SZA and whatnot. Yasmin was looking at a brochure from a PFLAG booth. Cameron was taking pictures of some of the floats.
“Seriously, the lengths they went to support us is really amazing.”
“I know, right? Just one thing is missing to make this the perfect day, though,” Roxxi responded.
“Really? What could be missi—mph!”
Roxxi kissed Nevra, wrapping her arms around the other woman’s large rainbow-themed coat. Nevra wasted no time in kissing back, softly twirling the ends of her girlfriend’s semi-dyed hair.
Roxxi slowly removed herself from Nevra, a cheeky smile on her face.
“Nothing anymore. Happy pride month, Nev’.”
“Happy pride month, Rox’,” Nevra replied before leaning forward for another kiss.
