Challenge 361 - Conversation - Firefly - Inara Serra/Kaylee Frye - Tongue-Tied
Title: Tongue-Tied
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Inara Serra/Kaylee Frye
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 176
Prompt: 361-Conversation
Summary: Someone so practiced in the art of conversation shouldn't be having these problems
The art of conversation was something that every Companion learned during their years of training. Being able to put a customer at ease was primary so a Companion studied a wide variety of subjects and took classes on cultural literacy, so that no “sensitive” topics were brought up by mistake. It was all part of the job, enough conversation to get by with a customer until words were no longer needed.
Why then, did Inara find herself tongue-tied around Serenity's mechanic? The young woman was fun-loving and relaxed, always ready with a smile. She should have been the easiest person for Inara to talk to on board the ship, but there was something about her lack of artifice that was both intriguing and intimidating. She'd catch Kaylee looking at her sometimes and would open her mouth to say something but could never find the words. Instead, she'd just return Kaylee's smile and be grateful for the moment that it could be enough.
One day, Inara would figure out all the words she'd been wanting to say.
