Honoka opened her mouth to speak, but Kotori interrupted her by saying, "No. If you're going to say what I think you're going to say, then I'm going to ask the question first." Not like Kotori to be assertive, and that seemed to put Honoka off the script she had planned, since she closed her mouth again and stood there blinking for a second before nodding to Kotori to continue. "Thank you. Are you my girlfriend or not, Honoka?"
"That's not a romantic way to say it at all," Honoka complained, "but yes, I'm pretty sure that's what I am at this point." There had been a date, there had been hand-holding, and there had been a kiss, so – "So, there. Does that make you happy, Kotori?"
Kotori thought about it for a moment before replying, "It does, especially now that the reunion tour is over." Technically, they had not been idols for several years, but they had all been talked into one more tour before officially disbanding. "We'll have the privacy we've been wanting for a while, so I think it's safe to be together now." Fans had certain ideas about "idol purity" and the like that made relationships difficult.
"What about Umi, though?" Honoka asked. "Because I'm pretty sure she likes you, too." She blushed. "And, uh, me, too. How do you think that's supposed to work?"
"Oh, she can be my girlfriend, too," Kotori said, not needing to think about that at all.
"Huh?!" Honoka made a face that Kotori had never seen before, one that involved bulging eyes and a choking expression. "I don't think that's how it works!"
"Why not?" Kotori did not seem perturbed by the idea, at least.
"Because, um –" Honoka scrounged for reasons in her head. "– it's cheating, maybe? Aren't you only supposed to have one girlfriend at a time? That's what the TV dramas say, anyway." Not that the TV dramas showed girl-girl relationships at all.
"You can't believe everything you see on TV," Kotori scolded, wagging her finger in a way that made her look almost exactly like her mother. "Besides, all three of us get along, and we all trust each other." And we've hurt each other before and gotten over it, she implied without saying. "Or are you saying you just want me all to yourself?"
"I'm not trying to be greedy," Honoka demurred, "I promise. This is just new to me, and I don't want it to be complicated from the get-go." She sighed. "Life's already complicated enough as it is, even if we're not touring any more. University is just –" Kotori put a finger on her lips to shush her, though she did it with a smile on her face.
"So don't think too hard about it, Honoka," Kotori said. "Just jump in head first and worry about it later. That's what you do with almost everything else, right?"
Honoka grimaced as she said, "I'm not sure that's a compliment, but ... all right." She looked over her shoulder, never mind that no one stood behind her. "We're going to have to sit down with Umi and talk about this, though. I don't want to go behind her back. That never ends well." And she had the first-hand experience to prove it.
"Oh, I've already talked to her about it," Kotori said. "She was mostly just worried about whether or not you'd be okay with it." She made a face. "Stick in the mud."
"You know, you really need to keep me in the loop on things like –" A light bulb turned on in her head. "That means you and Umi have already been on a date. You're really slick." And Kotori only smiled in return. "Starting to feel like I'm not the greedy one."
"I'm just being proactive," Kotori said, "but, if it'll make you feel better, we'll go and see Umi about it and straighten things out for you." A scolding tone again, but a gentle one. "You really need somebody to look after you, Honoka, and 'somebody' doesn't have to only be one person. You've always had the two of us, it'll just be a little ... more, that's all." She grinned. "Don't overthink it, okay? Let's go and get milkshakes, all of us."
"You pay," Honoka mumbled, "and I want strawberry." They started walking, and she added, "Hey, Kotori, this all ... isn't like the Kotori I knew when I was a kid. You're making all these decisions and ... things. What the heck happened to you?"
"I grew up a little," Kotori said, not slowing her pace. "That's all."
"Then I guess I've got to grow up a lot," Honoka replied, but Kotori took her by the hand, and that reassured her a little as they went to find Umi.
END.
