Title: Found Family

Summary: Post-DOA5. Helena and Kasumi have one key thing in common.

* * * *

"I am offering you a position at the company, Kasumi," Helena said, her green eyes unblinking, "but it is more or less a formalization of the tasks you already perform on my behalf. All that will change is that you will have access to money and a place to stay." She sighed, perhaps anticipating the arguments that Kasumi already had prepared. "There is no need for you to be difficult about this. You are safe at DOATEC. Your clan cannot pursue you if you are under my protection, and, in all honesty, after everything you have done for them in absentia, for them to continue that pursuit is foolish."

"I have said it before," Kasumi replied, turning her back to Helena and resting her hands on the balcony rail, listening to the sound of the waves washing upon the beach, "and I will say it again: I can never stay in one place for too long, not only because of my clan, but because –" She imagined Helena mouthing the words behind her, already anticipating them. "– that is the way of the shinobi, and I am no different despite being disgraced." She turned back to face Helena again. "Imagine how a songbird feels in a cage after only knowing the sky. But ... that is not going to persuade you, is it?"

"No, it is not," Helena admitted, walking up and standing next to her, the night sky seeming unusually clear above New Zack Island. "because I can only imagine the toll all of the running and fighting has been taking upon you. You have not been at rest – at all – for years, at this point. Kunoichi or not, you can only twist and bend so far before you break –" A smile that might have seemed cold if Kasumi had not come to know her as well as she did. "– like the bamboo, since you enjoy metaphors. You might be good at hiding your pain, Kasumi, but it is more obvious than you seem to think it is."

Kasumi only nodded once before Helena continued, saying, "I understand, too, that most of what you have suffered has been because of your family and its obligations." She, too, rested her hands on the rail. "As you can imagine, this is one thing I can grasp better than most, though, down to both of us having half-sisters." Another smile, but one that she reserved for herself. "Meeting Kokoro and building that relationship has become one of the joys of my life, but –" The smile disappeared. "– you and Ayane do not have that. I only had to look at her face once to see the rage she feels."

"It is not as bad as it used to be," Kasumi said, "perhaps because she and I have fought so many times. One day, things might almost be normal again." Signs of exhaustion – not of the body, but of the soul – crept into her face. "One day." She leaned on the rail, looking up at Helena. "You talk about family. What is it that you are offering me, Helena? Because you are making it sound like more than a company job." In the distance, above the largest hotel on the island, a single firework exploded, perhaps a test for another night. "And why did you wait to ask me until coming here?"

"Because there are no eyes and ears here," Helena replied, "only you and I. And what I am offering you is –" She hesitated. Unusual for her. "– family, Kasumi. Despite our differences, you and I have become determined to trust each other, and that is the foundation of not only friendship, but family. I understand that you find it difficult to stay in one place, but –" Her voice softened. "– you have emotional needs. I can see them behind your eyes, a little more each day. It is loneliness that can and will destroy you, one day. And that is another thing that I know equally as well as you do."

"Emotional needs," Kasumi said, as if tasting unfamiliar words. "When is a shinobi allowed to have those?" She remembered the faces of her mother and father, and she remembered, too, that Shiden and Ayame loved each other, though they only rarely showed it. It seemed like a very long time ago that she had last seen them, and perhaps it had been. "You answer my question, and yet you do not answer it, so I will ask it again: What are you offering me, Helena? I –" And Helena touched her cheek, very gently. Kasumi looked deep into her eyes, and she saw vulnerability there.

"You and I both understand –" Always calm and collected, Helena, but she had a heat in her voice that Kasumi had never witnessed before. "– that there are things that cannot be put into words, as well as things that bring pain if they are put into words. So, please –" Kasumi nodded again, closing her eyes as Helena kissed her lightly upon the lips, resting her hands upon her waist. The kunoichi let the kiss linger for a little while before Helena separated from her, saying, "Please know ... that was one of the hardest things I have had to do. I am like you: I do not open myself up to anyone."

"I –" Helena had been looking for a crack in her shell, and she had expertly tapped it. Kasumi could feel years of suppressed emotion waiting to escape, and she had to fight to keep them down. "– all right. I ... am going to need a little time. This is new to me. You –" Her eyes felt wet, though she did not cry. "– are my first kiss, Helena." Another firework in the distance. "And here in paradise. Irony." But she could feel her shields dropping, a little at a time. "I accept, but I am going to need your help. It has been so long that –" But Helena kissed her again, and the need for words soon passed.

END.
