"I know that face," the voice of Mae said from behind Celica. "Never thought I'd see it on your face, though." She took a seat next to the priestess by the dying fire, mimicking her by resting her elbows on her knees. "Thought you had more sense than that."
"I thought I did, too," Celica murmured, sighing, looking into the distance at a female figure – Sonya – standing next to the horses. "When do you get to lecture me?"
"Well, it's my right as your best friend, of course." Mae smiled. "These things happen." She nudged Celica. "I can't rightly blame you, though. She's –" She considered her words. "– well, she's beautiful. Intelligent. Powerful, too. I'm a little jealous."
"Hmm." Celica lifted her head. "Maybe that'll be you in a few years?" Her turn for a smile. "Not saying you aren't adorable now, of course, but you've got a lot of living left to do."
"You don't have to salve my ego, Celica." Mae laughed. "I know I'm cute. Hopefully, so does –" She caught herself. "Well. We're not talking about me here. What are you going to do about this crush of yours? We'll be back over the mountains soon, you know."
Celica lowered her voice. "She and I are almost strangers! We've barely talked."
"So talk to her. Get to know her. If she trusted you enough to come with us in the first place, she'll open up to you." Mae wrinkled her nose. "People tend to do that with you. You've got that effect. It'd be kind of annoying if it wasn't so useful all the time."
"Thanks, I think." Celica rose to her feet. "Well. No time like the present, right?"
"Of course. Go get her." Mae winked. "I'll even keep your seat warm for you."
"Sure." Celica took a deep breath, smoothing her skirts. "All right, then."
As soon as she reached the horses, Sonya said, not turning to face her, still brushing the mane of the white horse next to her, "Something on your mind, young lady?"
"I –" Celica paused. "I, ah, thought I knew what to say, Sonya, but I ... don't."
"A little overwhelmed, hmm?" She turned to face the priestess, folding her hands in front of herself. "I suppose I do make a strong first impression. You don't have to speak."
Celica blushed. "And now I look and feel foolish."
Sonya took her by the hands. "No, you don't. You're young. You've got a lot of feelings to unpack and sort, and some of them are bound to be new and uncomfortable."
A sheepish smile. "That's one way to put it. Forgive me for being silly."
"It isn't silly." Sonya tilted her head, her dark eyes neutral, trying to read her face. "How about this, then? If you said what you thought you were going to say, how would you expect me to react? You already know I'm not going to burst into giggles."
"I-I don't know." Celica became very conscious of the short distance between them. "I ... suppose I'd just want these feelings to be acknowledged, whatever they are."
A soft laugh. "A need to be acknowledged. You're a passionate person." She reached up, touched her face, noticed the way she shivered as her fingertips brushed her cheek. "And you wear it on your sleeve. If you're not careful, someone will hurt you for that."
Celica let all of her vulnerability show in her face. "Will you ... hurt me, Sonya?"
"No." And Sonya proved it by leaving one kiss on her cheek. "There."
The priestess turned a deep shade of red. "Is that acknowledgment?"
"It is." Sonya smoothed her hair, smiling again. "Make of it what you will. We've got a lot of travelling left to do. Maybe it will pass. Maybe it won't." Another kiss on the cheek. "Protect your life in the days to come, and we'll see what answers we have."
"I'll protect yours, too," Celica replied, and Sonya nodded once before separating from her, leaving her to think, Mae tells me that I'm always giving of myself. Giving too much of myself. For everyone. She closed her eyes. What is it if it's only for one person?
When she opened her eyes again, she did not have any answers for that question.
END.
