FIC: Irregulars [Sid Story – Kunoichi / Mermaid (Mature)]
Title: Irregulars
Fandom: Sid Story
Pairing: Kunoichi / Mermaid
Rating: Mature
Prompt: 035 – Fantasy
Word Count: 990
Summary: The Irregulars are not always prone to violence.
* * * *
Hundreds of students at Lussid Academy. Thousands of Sidians summoned through the Space-Time Engine to serve them. Countless Irregulars – they looked like Sidians, but they had not been summoned. They had simply appeared, dripping through cracks in space-time like moisture through a pile of stones. And they almost invariably turned to violence upon encountering a Sidian ... or a human, alone and unprotected. The students had learned to summon in order to defend themselves, though it seemed like the number of Irregulars only increased as the ranks of the Sidians expanded.
Kunoichi belonged to those defenders. Like most of the rank and file, she had no name, only her profession. Many like her served the novices, since not every student had the ability to summon one of the Sidians that had a name and a history. Her novice, in particular, had only arrived at the Academy for her first year less than a month ago, and her orders generally consisted of having Kunoichi patrol the grounds in search of Irregulars. Too broad, in her opinion – those orders allowed her to range for quite a distance, and she tended to venture into the woods around the Academy.
Because it feels like home, she admitted to herself as she jumped from tree to tree, her passage making no noise, disturbing not a single leaf, or what little I can recall of it. She had come from one of countless alternate universes, and memories had no utility for her. As far as she could determine, any memory she did have represented a fragment of another existence, another person. Being in the woods at least helped her feel like less of a stranger. ... Except that the silence seemed too complete, too perfect. Her presence had not gone unnoticed, and she immediately suspected the enemy.
A pond, serene and undisturbed. But she noticed a silhouette on the bank nearest to her, illuminated only by what little moonlight filtered through the trees and clouds above. A Mermaid – she only had the fins at the end of her tail in the water, but she kept them still, sensing Kunoichi above her. And yet she had not opened her mouth to sing. That represented the true danger of that type of Irregular: Her song could enchant a person, make them walk down into the water and drown there, and most Sidians did not have a real immunity to it. If the Mermaid had wanted her dead, she would have sung.
Another Sidian, and not an Irregular? But the tension in the air still suggested an Irregular, and Kunoichi trusted her instincts. She dropped to the ground, facing the Mermaid directly, able to close the distance between them instantly if she had to, but the Mermaid, upon seeing her, instead tilted her head to one side, as if curious, then gestured to her to approach. Irregulars did not do that. They resorted to violence, or to powers that made violence easier to perform. What did this Irregular have in mind? Kunoichi approached, keeping her hands close to the multitude of knives on her belt.
The Mermaid smiled, using her hands to push herself up and be as close to eye level with her visitor as she could manage without leaving the water. Not that Kunoichi could see her eyes, anyway, since Mermaids made certain to keep their faces more or less concealed by their hair – not unlike Kunoichi, truth be told, since all in her profession wore masks and did not remove them under any circumstances. She wished that the Mermaid could speak, could explain herself, but ... they did not speak, either, and the songs that they sung had no words, though they still had human-like non-verbal cues.
I should not be ... this close. Is she ... charming me? That did not seem to be the case. Her training and instincts could tip her off to signs of that type of influence. She bent slightly at the knees, only inches from the Mermaid, who reached up – gingerly, almost shyly – to touch her face, running her long fingers along her mask, her neck, her hair, all as if learning her features through touch alone. And Kunoichi did not find the experience unpleasant. The Mermaid had wet hands, true, and her skin had a moist texture to it, but she seemed to be taking care in her movements as she explored.
What am I doing? This is an Irregular. But she did not resist as the Mermaid hugged her close, sighing happily, as if Kunoichi was like a stuffed animal to be clutched by a sleeping child. Is it because I'm a Sidian, almost like her, but ... not? She expected more of a fish smell, but there was none. Then again, the pond was fresh water, so she supposed that not all Mermaids needed the sea. That thought was promptly interrupted when the Mermaid left a soft kiss on her mask, right where her lips were. Affection? From an Irregular, her enemy? What was she supposed to make of that?
A giggle, and the Mermaid disappeared into the water, but not before keeping her head above it long enough to smile again. As if she wants me to come back. A warm and unfamiliar feeling. As if she trusts me. Kunoichi nodded, not knowing if her newfound companion could see it. I'll come back tomorrow, then. My orders won't change. What did she see in all of it? What did she gain? Like the prince coming down to the shore in the old stories. A fantasy, but perhaps holding a grain of truth deep inside it. Irregular or not, this is ... nice. And all the nicer for being a change from days of orders and duty.
When Kunoichi returned to the pond the next night, she removed her mask and found a wet Mermaid kiss to be far more enjoyable with nothing to stop it.
END.
