Title: Trying to Fit In

Summary: Dani encounters Jessica at a party
Dani walked into the party. She’d worked undercover before but she’d felt like such an impostor around rich people. She worked on a cop’s salary and did most of her undercover work on the streets or in the clubs in neighborhoods like hers. These people spoke their own language, dotted with dollar signs and didn’t blink when they mentioned buying a second home somewhere or wintering somewhere exotic. She felt fortunate when she was able to get a cocktail at the local bar, not invest hundreds in a bottle of wine that wouldn’t last the night.
Jessica approached her, smile dripping from her lips. She always was so at ease at these events. “Dani, how lovely to see you again,” said Jessica.
“And you as well,” Dani replied.
Jessica wrapped her fingers around Dani’s arm. “My son should know by now that I don’t need protecting.”
“I was invited.”
“Oh. You know the Carltons, then.”
“Yes.”
“Rick and Melissa.”
“Yes.”
“Rick's wife's name is Michelle.”
“Right. I always get him confused with the other Rick.”
Jessica’s lips tightened and she spoke through clenched teeth. “What are you doing here, Detective?”
“Well, to be honest, I really wanted to see you again.”
Jessica looked surprised. “Really?”
Dani leaned close and whispered into Jessica’s ear. “Yes. I had hoped that you’d be here tonight. Maybe we can make an early night of it.”
Jessica’s fingers lightly drifted over her skin. “Maybe we can.”

Ha! Indeed. Yeah, I was disappointed that they went that way with Dani, but I can see her side of it, too. (Though she does the same thing in a way later for Bright.)
