Peggy had never looked for a woman who'd been easier to find. The dive was packed past breathing, but Helen Cobb glowed through it, all ash-blonde hair and primary colours, moving like Bill Haley y sus Cometas were the only sound in the world.

Later, between most everyone leaving and the señora behind the bar throwing the rest out on their ears, Peggy bought her a tequila and said, "I've heard that you fly at least half as well as you dance."

"Half?" Cobb scoffed, "Twice as good, at least." Through the bravado and the booze, Peggy could see the fire of a woman who'd never turned down a challenge or a dare, and one with enough skill and luck to have survived twenty years of that attitude. "And, honey, you ain't seen a quarter of what I can do on the ground."

Peggy looked her over again, and knocked back her own shot. Cobb was ten years her junior, and far too much her reflection, but Peggy had never been good with dares either. "No?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and trailing her finger along the edge of the glass. "In that case, would you care to show me?"

Whatever inspired you to think of this pairing was a particularly awesome muse. I love your economy of words, great descriptors in short phrases like "the dive was packed past breathing" and "far too much her reflection." But mostly I love thinking about how Carter and Cobb would own SHIELD and give Jarvis a stress ulcer.

Someone actually wrote it, sorta, ages ago (try the Helen Cobb tag on AO3), and I've been meaning to do something with it ever since. I read a couple books about the Mercury 13 project and women fliers in that period, but haven't landed on a plot yet.

I'm not sure Peggy could get Helen into SHIELD full time, I feel like she's be more of a free agent who came in an rained chaos and gave Edwin and Howard nightmares a couple times a year.

You should totally check out the first trade of DeConnick's run on Captain Marvel. The art is... uneven, but Helen Cobb is AMAZING.

I'm afraid I'm way too intimidated by a century of canon to start reading Marvel comics now. :D Though maybe a single series... I'm going to see if they have it at the library.
