The first time Phyllida kissed a girl, she was too drunk to remember she had a boyfriend.
It wasn’t serious, of course. She and Ted had kind of agreed to date only for the summer, and go back to their separate lives when school started again. They were both seventeen and thought themselves very mature for not letting emotions get in the way of a little fun. Of course it was more complicated than that, it always was—but the point was, she probably shouldn’t have been kissing Emily Montrouge at her cousin’s debutante ball, with the fairylights blurred by the smuggled alcohol and creeping morning mist.
Emily kissed too wetly, too eagerly, her little hands grasping at Phyl’s waist. She didn’t want Emily Montrouge, she realized; she wanted… She didn’t know what she wanted. To kiss a girl. Any girl. Someone as unlike the square-shouldered, laddish Ted Vance as you could get.
They stumbled apart and Phyllida escaped into the nearest bathroom to wash her face, retch, and drink from the faucet until she felt a little more sober. The cold pale light of the bathroom lamp showed her pale face in the mirror, dark curls plastered against her forehead, but stare at it as much as she might, she couldn’t figure out why she’d kissed Emily Montrouge.
She would figure it out in a few more years.
