The first time Jackie kissed a girl was also the last time her grandmother spoke to her.

They’d been curled up together at the back of the church youth camp’s blanket fort, her and Mary-Leanne, the strange girls who wore their socks too high and tried to make objects float with their minds. If that weren’t bad enough, Jackie thought Mary-Leanne was prettier than any boy, and Mary-Leanne said Jackie had kissable lips, like a movie star, if movie stars were black.

And Jackie liked that, so she let Mary-Leanne kiss her at the back of the blanket fort, and liked that too, the soft illicit touch of her lips, light as a feather, and like a shot of something right through the center of her, saying yes when all she heard all day was no.

But Grandma Devine was the camp supervisor for the night and, well, nothing were quite the same after she caught them there. Something worse about sex than even bad magic, even though everybody was doing sex anyhow, all the time. But you weren’t supposed to get caught.

It made you a bad girl. Meant you’d be dancing at bars at twenty instead of getting married and having babies.

What Jackie never told her grandma was that that suited her just fine.
