[CHALLENGE 263] Keeping Secrets [Fire Emblem: Three Houses]

Title: Keeping Secrets
Fandom: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Pairing: Catherine with Flayn, Shamir, and Rhea. Basically, Catherine loves women.
Rating: G
Prompt: 263 - 'like'
Word Count: 900
Summary: Seteth is on the hunt for the woman who has stolen his little sister's heart! After interrogating many of the ladies of Garreg Mach, he confronts Catherine and Shamir at the lake. Catherine has no clue what Seteth is talking about. Obviously.

“It has come to my attention that Flayn has a… crush.”

Seteth stood in front of Catherine and Shamir at the lake. Apparently, he’d been snooping around the monastery all day after Flayn had dared to tell him that she had a fondness for someone within its walls. A woman, she’d specified — and that wasn’t the problem. Seteth cared not that his sister liked girls. The problem was, supposedly, the very fact that Flayn did indeed like someone.

Catherine heard all of this before Seteth even approached her and Shamir. She’d heard from Manuela, who heard from Byleth, who heard from Hilda, and so-on. Catherine wasn’t one for gossip, to say nothing of Shamir who cared even less, but when Seteth was skulking around the monastery as much as he was, it was kind of hard for whispers not to travel around. Especially if it had Professor Byleth talking about it too (or at least, warning the others).

“Oh, yeah?” Catherine said casually, shifting her weight to one side and lifting her hand into the air. She could hear Shamir groan behind her, but she ignored her. Her partner was very stuffy and no fun. Honestly, seeing Seteth this way just made Catherine want to tease him. “She’s about that age, huh.”

“This is a serious matter. Need I remind you that we’re talking about my precious little sister, Catherine,” Seteth responded, not at all amused by Catherine’s attitude. “The pair of you wouldn’t happen to know anything about this, would you?”

“No,” Shamir said behind Catherine.

Catherine snickered, a wide smile on her face. “C’mon, Seteth, is it really such a big deal? You trust everyone in the monastery, don’t ‘ya?”

“That is…”

“Hey, hey, if it’s a question you’d rather not answer, don’t worry about it!” Catherine waved her hand around and laughed heartily. She could practically see Shamir’s face behind her, her forehead buried in her palm. “It’s not like I trust each and every person around here, either.”

Seteth’s eyebrows creased together in despair. He looked as though he was in pain. He pinched the bridge of his nose with his forefinger and thumb. “Goddess…” He said, as though he was asking the divine for strength. “Catherine. With that said from your own mouth, surely you can understand why I am worried about my little sister developing feelings for an unknown woman.”

“Sure, sure,” she said dismissively. “But c’mon. Try to think about this with a level-head. The other students are all around her age, right? I understand you want to protect her. I have people I want to protect too,” as Catherine said this, she thought of Rhea — the woman whose side she swore to be by until her death. At that moment, she felt she could actually understand Seteth… not that she was going to stop teasing him. “But she’s gonna have to grow up someday.”

Catherine’s words seemed to go in one of Seteth’s ears and out the other. He was still stuck in the same position as before.

“I cannot waste my time here. I must find the perpetrator.”

“Hey, isn’t ‘perpetrator’ too harsh a word? It’s just a cr—”

“I do not have time for this!” Seteth said again. “I must bid you farewell, Catherine, Shamir. If you receive any information about this, I implore you to please disclose it to me.”

“Yeah, okaaay…” Catherine started, but Seteth was already turned around and stomping his way towards the dining hall by the time Catherine finished.

“Geez.” Catherine said, but not without a still-underlying tone of amusement in her voice. She turned to Shamir, who looked just as un-amused as Catherine imagined. “Can you believe him?”

“You play too much,” Shamir said.

“Aw, it’s all harmless fun, though,” Catherine laughed, finally turning to Shamir again. “I don’t know who to feel worse for. Seteth or Flayn!”

Shamir was silent. Her eyes narrowed at Catherine.

“Catherine, be honest with me.”

“Why so serious?”

“I am being serious.”

“Yeah, and that’s the problem!”

Catherine could have sworn that Shamir was on the brink of pinching her nose just as Seteth had done. Instead, she put a hand on her hip and frowned.

“You know something about Flayn, don’t you? About who she likes.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. It’s me,” Catherine said, and then she shrugged. “I wasn’t about to tell Seteth that, though. That’s for Flayn to tell him. Plus, I wasn’t about to put myself in the line of Seteth’s fire. That’s why I gave him that line about the ‘other students.’ I’m sure he doesn’t suspect any of the instructors, or knights.”

Shamir shook her head, exasperated with both Catherine and Seteth. All things considered, Catherine thought that was fair.

“You’re ridiculous,” she sighed. “So? What do you think about Flayn? I assume she told you this to your face?”

“Mm, yeah. She did,” Catherine blinked once, and then she threw her arms around Shamir’s shoulders with a loud bark of a laugh. “Ahaha! Why are you askin’? Are you jealous, partner?”

Catherine couldn’t see as much, but she could feel the heat of Shamir’s cheeks tickle her own due to their proximity.

“You jump to the wildest conclusions,” Shamir said, but she could hear it — a fondness in Shamir’s voice. “I suppose I’ll keep your secret from Seteth. You didn’t answer my question, though.”

“Well, that’s because it’s a secret!”

Shamir sighed.
