[Tarot] Headlights and Thread (Original)
Title: Headlights and Thread
Fandom: Original
Pairing: Anna Pratt/Juliette Park
Rating: PG
Prompt: Chariot
Word Count: 400
Summary: Werewolves on the run. They're in love. (Previous Anna & Juliette fics here.) Some dark stuff.
A hand on Anna's arm held her back. "Don't step on the threshold."
"Okay." Anna took her foot back and placed it back on the floor of the hallway. "Why?"
"It's just a superstition," Juliette said. "Step over it. Come on. We should leave."
It was the dead of night, and they were somewhere between the sticks and actual wilderness. This house had been the first they'd seen for miles. "If you know it's a superstition, why do you care?" Anna asked as they hurried back to their stolen Cabriolet
Juliette shrugged as she slipped behind the wheel. "Why don't you eat dog? It's just not done. It's considered bad luck in Korea."
"All right." They didn't need any more bad luck. At least now they'd eaten and had petrol enough to last them until Edinburgh.
"Jules?" Anna asked after a while, as the road lights ended and they plunged into darkness, the only sight ahead what the headlights could illuminate.
"Yeah?"
"Do you think we could have been normal, you and I? Would we have been friends?"
"I don't know," Juliette admitted. "I always liked you."
"I know."
"You don't think you would have liked me?" Juliette's voice was steady when she asked it, her eyes on the road, but Anna heard the fragility in the question just the same, and it broke her heart. Just a little.
"If I'd got to know you, yeah. I would've bloody loved you. I do love you."
How Juliette had ever cammed, however innocently, was beyond Anna. The way that little smile lit up her face. Every emotion vivid in her eyes. For someone who lied so much, she was a terrible actor.
"Tell me another superstition."
"All right. You know about the red thread of fate?"
"No?"
Juliette held up her pinkie. "The God of matchmaking ties it around the little fingers of two people fated to be married. It's a sign you were meant to be together. Whatever happens, however much you struggle against it, there's just that one person who is your soulmate."
"People can have more than one," Anna murmured. "Just look at the divorce rate."
Juliette shook her head. "Not everyone gets a red thread."
Anna reached over and hooked her pinkie with Juliette's. "I guess then we're lucky."
They were going to die young. She knew this in her bones. But at least they'd be together.
