Challenge #248 - Style (Osomatsu san)
Title: Balloon or Stick?
Fandom: Osomatsu-san
Pairing: Nyaa/Totoko
Rating: T
Prompt: Style
Word Count: 519
Summary: Totoko struggles to be honest over her feelings about her girlfriend's appearance.
Alternative: AO3
Totoko looked up impatiently from her magazine as Nyaa finally walked through the changing room’s door. She had been waiting far too long for her comfort; she was certain she would have gotten through three different outfits in the time it took for her girlfriend to get through one. It was annoying. She'd bet anything Nyaa was doing it on purpose just to spite her.
Typical of Nyaa, she instantly tried to act cute, striking a cat-like pose and making a stupid cat sound. Maybe if Totoko wasn’t already tired of waiting she would have humoured her. Instead, she scowled and studied the new outfit with an unflattering critical eye. Then she scoffed, although it was more for show than actual dislike of the dress.
Sometimes Nyaa looked better than her. It pissed Totoko off. Why couldn’t Nyaa look bad in at least one style? Way to make someone like her of all people start feeling self-conscious.
“That’s gross,” she said. “You look like a balloon. Soon I’ll have to tie a string around your ankle so you don’t float away. Next!”
“Are you seriously calling me fat?”
“Of course not. I’m saying the dress is.”
“A dress can’t be fat!”
“Then why are you so wide? Try something slimmer!”
Nyaa eyed her a moment, heat in her gaze, but then she smirked and strutted closer to Totoko, leaning on the edge of the chair she was sitting on.
“Oh, I get it. You do like it.” She flipped her pink hair over her shoulder and smiled mischievously. “I mean, you’re always saying you’d like something more to grab on to. You’re just projecting all your horny desires on to me, right?”
“You wish.” Totoko wrinkled her nose. “Maybe if you were less of a stick I wouldn’t say stuff like that.”
Nyaa raised her eyebrows.
“Wait, so am I a balloon or a stick? Which one?”
Totoko didn’t answer, recognizing her mistake. She changed tactics.
“You take too long changing. Can’t you be a little more considerate?”
“So, you’re cranky, is that it?” Nyaa’s expression was dismissive, but it quickly became curious. “Let’s stop doing this. Be honest. Do you like it or not? I’m trying something new and I want your opinion.”
Totoko grunted but that wasn’t an answer. Nyaa watched Totoko thoughtfully, then casually looked at her fingernails.
“If you’re truthful, I’ll cut the outing short and we can do whatever Totoko-chan wants to do. No more waiting.”
It was easy for Totoko to let go of her pride with a promise like that.
"Well, I guess you're a little cute. Not as cute as me though. Hell will freeze over when that happens."
Nyaa rolled her eyes and hummed out her annoyance. Then she cupped Totoko's cheek and bent down, pressing her lips to Totoko's temple. It tingled pleasantly and suddenly made Totoko regret her previous behaviour. She knew it was stupid to be jealous of her own girlfriend, but she just couldn't help it.
"I like it," she said with more feeling behind it. "It's a nice change."
Nyaa sent her a pleased smile.
