[Janelle Monae lyrics] Prompt 6 - Heaven is betting on us
Title: Meeting the parents, again
Fandom: Original story
Characters/Pairings: Alexandra/Linda
Rating: Gen
Words: 1000
Prompt: Heaven is betting on us
Notes: This is the 14th story in the series.
Summary: Getting to know everyone.
So, the "big day" for Alex had finally arrived. She finally felt ready to meet with Linda's parents. Their conversation about the proposal had been slightly surreal, as usual.
"But are you sure you want to do that this soon?"
"Yes, I'm positive. I spoke about you to my mom last weekend, and she asked to meet you."
"Really?"
"Yup. When I told her I'm dating some fancy high class girl she couldn't believe it, so she told me she wanted to see you in person before she's believe it."
"... fancy high class... nah, forget it, tell me another thing. Do all important events in your family happen because of a dare?"
"Nah, it's just a thing between us. I said the same thing when she introduced me her boyfriend, that I wanted to see him to believe. But she really wants to meet with you, she asked a few times and was serious about it."
Surprisingly, that discussion had made Alex more interested in meeting them, when she had managed to get a hold on her nerves. And now he couldn't have been more calm, and ready to confront the two.
And when she saw them in person, a lot of things made sense - not just about Linda, but in general.
Her mother's husband was wearing a freaking tie and suit, and expensive looking ones at that, at a house lunch. Even for someone like her, who stood around people dressed very formal on a daily basis for work, it was a bit much.
That, and his stiff mannerism, made him look like some politician who had accidentally got lost on the way to a debate. Thankfully, Linda had warned her about it in advance, but it didn't make it any less unintentionally hilarious - and from the way Linda's mother had to turn away at least a couple times while they were just introducing each other, she wasn't the only one thinking that.
Linda's mother, on the other hand, was dressed in a simple printed dress, and seemed much more relaxed. She introduced herself - her name was Claudia, and her second husband was Franklin - and gave Alex a tour of the house.
The living room was nicely furnished, with elegant looking furniture in real wood and framed paintings hanging on the walls, gave her the feeling she had just walked into the home of a couple of old university professors. That feeling was swept away when she saw a bookshelf filled with trophies, DVD recordings of matches of all kinds of sports, and photos of Linda and her mother, or Linda and Franklin, showing off medals.
"That one was taken when she was in junior high." Claudia said, stepping forward and pointing to one of the pictures. "Her track team arrived second. Sadly we lost that medal when we moved, but she still has the certificate somewhere."
"Yes, I saw it. She keeps it framed, in the living room."
The older woman let out a small laugh. "Of course, silly me. And that one was taken at a fishing competition Frank went to. He arrived first, the fish he caught is in the other photo."
The photo shower the three of them standing around their catch. Linda looked about ten or so, and was smiling so widely it made the picture look some sort of commercial.
"You did sport together a lot." Alex commented, pointing to another picture where they were they were all wearing a competition number on their t-shirts.
"Yes, back when me and Frank had the energy."
"That's not true. I run the marathon with Linda this year, and got to the goal before her." He said.
"Only because she kept your same pace, and you know it." Claudia replied.
Before Franklin could say a word, however, Linda's voice resounded. "Dad? Could you come here and give me a hand? Since it was your idea?"
"Sure, here I come!" Franklin said, turning around and heading out of the living room.
When the man left the room, Alex and Claudia exchanged a look: the man had clearly left in a bit of a hurry, and both of them had noticed, but neither of them decided to comment about it, even now that he was far away enough for them to make a joke about it without worrying.
"Anyway, Alexandra, did Linda ever tell you about- Oh, by the way, can I call you Alexandra?"
"Just Alex, please."
"Oh, alright. Bad memories?"
"No, it's just that I find it a bit pretentious, and a mouthful."
"Really? It's fine, but that name is perfect for a feminine woman like you."
She had never thought of it that way. Then again, her girlfriend was possibly the least girly woman she had met, and had a cute name like Linda. They really completed each other, in a way.
Then, Linda's voice echoed in the house again. "Okay, I'm ready!"
"Then come here, darling." Claudia said. Alex straightened her back, and looked at the doorstep in anticipation.
A few seconds later Linda walked in, dressed in a white shirt and a long black skirt. "Laugh, and you're sleeping on the couch for a month." She then said, throwing a glare at Alex but speaking with a calm voice.
"And why would I laugh? You look cute." Alex said, walking towards her.
"Stop saying cute. Say beautiful, if you really have to." Linda replied.
"Oh, just take the compliment." Franklin said.
"Yes. Just this once." Claudia added.
Linda heaved out an extremely long sigh. "Alright then, just this time. I'm cute, okay?"
"Yes you are." Alex replied, giving her a peck on the cheek. "You look great." She then added, wrapping her arm around Linda's shoulders.
"Alright then. If you're both ready, we can sit down all together." Claudia said.
"Sure." Linda replied, then she and Alex walked towards the couch. They sat down, and Alex took Linda's hand in hers. She hadn't felt this calm and ready in a long while.
