[Janelle Monae Lyrics] Prompt 12 - So dress me up I'll like it better if we both pretend
Title: Arrayed
Fandom: Original story
Characters/Pairings: Alexandra/Linda
Rating: Gen
Words: 456
Prompt: So dress me up I'll like it better if we both pretend
Notes: This is the 12th story in the series.
Summary: Not everyone is cut for formality.
Looking at the pile of clothes on the bed and the empty closet, Alex heaved out a long sigh. This was the second time this week that this same scene had unfolded, with almost the exact same words each time Linda had discarded one of the clothes - well, to be precise, she had repeated the same reasons over and over, a bit like a broken record. Too garish, too loud and too ridiculous were the three she had used the most.
By this point, Alex had had to fight the temptation to ask if she was doing it on purpose because she wasn't too keen on the whole dinner mess. Some minutes later, as she started to put the clothes back into the closet, she started to winder if Linda meant those things about the clothes, or if she was talking about the dinner and was just trying to be smart about it. She bit back that question too, sighed again and kept on putting away everything.
"So, are you really sure you don't like any of these?" Alex decided to ask.
"Positive." Linda replied while folding a shirt on the bed. "There's nothing in here I can wear and look good at a lunch."
"How about the white shirt and black trousers?"
"Nah."
"But you look so good in them!"
"It's not a work interview!"
Alex replied with yet another sigh. If even that hadn't worked, she wasn't going to see her into anything even vaguely formal at the lunch.
"Huff and puff how much you want, I'd just look ridiculous." Linda replied. "Can you see me in a pantsuit?"
"Yes." She said, and she really thought so. Sure, she might have needed a better haircut, but she would have looked great in it.
After a moment, Linda replied: "Alright, I can see that, kinda. So let me ask this: can you see me..." She waved her hand, and looked for a word for a moment, "fancying myself up?"
Now it was Alex's turn to be at a loss for words. Yes, that would have been a new one.
"That wouldn't be me." Linda said. "And you said you wanna show me to my parents like I really am, right? So, no fancying myself up."
Alex was almost on the verge of letting out a laugh, but managed to hold back. She put the hanger she was holding back in the closet, and slowly clapped her hands. "Well played."
A wide grin spread on Linda's face. "Take or leave."
"Now slow down." Alex replied, her hands on her waist. "Alright, you can pick what you're going to wear, but please put something vaguely formal, for once."
"Okay, I promise." Linda said, her smile softening again.
