[Janelle Monae Lyrics] Prompt 1 - Little rough around the edges, but I keep it smooth
Title: Meeting the parents
Fandom: Original story
Characters/Pairings: Alexandra/Linda
Rating: Teen
Words: 648
Prompt: Little rough around the edges, but I keep it smooth
Notes: While I'll be posting the ficlets following the order of the table (more or less), the stories themselves are in non-chronological order. This is the 13th story in the series.
Summary: Introducing your girlfriend to your parents can be a real task.
In the back of her mind, Alex had been dreading this moment ever since things between them had gotten serious, so much that for a while a part of her had almost hoped that their relationship would have never reached the "let's introduce her to mom and dad" stage for this reason alone. And now that it was happening, with Linda standing right in the same room with her relatives, she was strung tighter than a violin.
But while there were a few issues, much to her own surprise they weren't the same she had imagined in her worst predictions: first and most important, grandma seemed to have taken this well, despite her judgmental comments about how ridiculous her choice of outfit was.
Then again, Alex could agree in full this time - really, a jeans overall? Was that the only clean thing Linda had lying around her apartment, or was she trying to be stereotypical to avoid disappointing them?
But thankfully things had gone well: Linda had managed to get along not just with her relatives on her mother's side (though she had no doubt that part would have gone swimmingly), but was also enjoying the company of her father's family. She had even had a nice enough conversation with grandma, which constituted a small miracle in and of itself: as much as she tried to think about it, Alex couldn't think of a single conversation argument that the two of them could have had in common.
At least, until at one point Linda had managed to plunge the room in utter and embarassed with a few simple words.
"Nah, it's cool, it's just that I never would've imagined someone so old would have been so open minded."
And she had said it with such a chipper tone, too.
It had taken some seconds for Alex to jar herself out of that embarrassment, and find something to say: "Well... when we go out for a walk together, it's mostly elderly people that turn around to look at us. And it's kind of weird, you know. And surprising."
Alex had made up those words on the fly, and much to her own relief not only they made sense, but she had also managed to say those words with a clear voice. She had even been able to say that last bit of sentence without her voice trailing off. Good.
Less good was the fact it had taken her seconds between finishing speaking and someone replying; in that time, Alex started wondering if she should have added something, to make her sentence more precise, and explain that what was weird was the feeling it left them with, not the being looked at, and definitely not that the people looking were elderly, and most important that what she meant by surprising--
Thankfully, grandma came to the rescue, like she often did. "Oh, I see. I imagine that must be embarrassing." She said while bringing her hand to her mouth, in a movement that she probably had intended to look casual.
"Er... at times." Alex replied, managing a smile that, she hoped, didn't look as fake as grandma's little hand flourish.
With that, Linda seemed to have regained some courage as well. "Yeah, but nothing we can't handle!", she said after clearing her voice. It didn't come out as boisterous as she was clearly aiming for, but was close enough. Then, in silent accord, everybody restarted the conversations they had been having until that moment, including grandma and Linda.
Alex finally allowed herself to relax; so, it had happened, and it hadn't been as bad as she had feared. She shushed the voice in the back of her head that kept on repeating "what if this happens again?", and decided to step closer to Linda and grandma. She really wanted to know what they had been talking about for this long.
