Gloria shook out her hair and breathed in the fresh air, out here by the sea where the fumes couldn't reach. It was a bright, beautiful morning--but weren't they all, in August in Los Angeles? She dangled her shoes--silver things with straps and a heel that could probably kill a man--in her hand and stepped on to the sand, wiggling her toes in deep despite the risk of bottle caps, and worse.

She closed her eyes until all she could see was the glow through her eyelids, and feel the breeze in her hair. She wanted last night's phone conversation to fall off her, sprinkle into the sand among the rest of the ugly rubbish and leave her clean.

Ditty just wanted her daughter back. Sure. But Gloria would rather stay forever here on the beach with the glittering sea burned into her retinas than marry a man and settle down to run a pub on the other side of this great country. She had no money, no future, not even a lover since Jackie had seen the light and dumped her sorry ass--

But so long as she kept her eyes closed, she was still free.
