It was a nice evening. Most evenings were nice on Donna’s island, with heat still lingering in the rocks and the breeze from the sea cool and snappy. Rosie sat watching the bonfire with a cocktail in her hand. Tanya paced.
“We should tell her. It's been decades.”
“Hmh.”
“We should tell everybody."
"Really?"
"It's high time. We’ve cheated on every man we ever dated with one another. It’s a different world now.”
“Are you telling me you will never again see some guy you want to lick like a lollipop? It’s all gonna be about my wrinkly bottom from now on?”
“It’s always been all about your wrinkly bottom.” Tanya stopped pacing and rested a white-gloved hand on Rosie’s shoulder. Her every motion belied the kind of careful elegance Rosie could never manage in a hundred years, but that was just Tanya. Her filthy, fun, endlessly loyal Tanya. “Rosie. I’m asking you to marry me. Dump that Swede like a hot plate of meatballs and mash and run away with me on my yacht.”
“Mmm.”
“We’ll get married over and over. Las Vegas. Lancaster. London. Let’s do all the L-cities where gay marriage is legal.”
Rosie poked at the fire. “You think you’re way ahead of me, don’t you?”
“Aren’t I?”
A piece of paper flew up on a puff of hot air from the fire. Rosie just caught sight of her own signature in blue ink. Catharsis aside, this may have been a little stupid for paperwork reasons. Bill’s copy of the marriage certificate would have to do for the divorce proceedings.
“You do have a nice yacht,” Rosie said. It was a little mean, but Tanya was so cute when she begged.
Tanya folded her long legs now and crouched beside Rosie’s chair. “You bitch,” she murmured into Rosie’s ear. “You’ve already done it, haven’t you?”
“Las Vegas first, I think,” said Rosie with a sigh. It had been a good try. “Something just for us.”
She turned her head, and they found themselves nose to nose. It was Tanya who pitched forward, but Rosie who reached out her hand to grab the back of Tanya’s head.
She’d been right. It was high time to come out of the shadows.
