I love you, I love you, I love you.

Tenko has liked, before. She has always liked - girls. Tenko was bullied for this likeness, but the cruel words of bullies couldn’t deter what was deep in her bones (and later, when she learned the art of aikido, she learned to pummel those words from their mouths, in the case of men. Secretly, it hurt when it was from the mouths of the girls she loved so much). Chabashira is a freak! Chabashira is a lesbian! But she still liked, she liked with all of her heart because that was what was inside her. She didn’t want those feelings to escape her.

She’d never loved, though, as much as she wanted to. She thought of love, of the perfect girl for her that she’d meet one day, when she was alone in her room and she’d roll around on her sheets with her pillow squished in her arms. She’ll have to be small so I can pick her up easily! She’d think to herself excitedly, a dear ideal without a face.

She’d never loved. No, she’d never loved. Not until she met Himiko.

She loved Himiko when she first saw her. She’s small enough to pick up! Tenko thought excitedly, as she looked at Himiko’s adorable face, even despite the situation they were in. Short red hair, droopy, sleepy eyes, so sweet that Tenko could just pick her up and cradle her to sleep (if Himiko asked, Tenko would, Tenko would do anything for her). She wanted to get closer to Himiko. She couldn’t help herself. So she’d approached Himiko, introduced herself, and made herself a friend.

Though Himiko was smaller, Tenko would follow her around everywhere, like a baby chick. When people began to die, Tenko clung even harder, had to protect her. “Tenko will always protect Yumeno-san. Tenko will do anything for Yumeno-san,” Tenko would say confidently, and Himiko would always shrugs her shoulders with a mumble.

“Nyeh, stop,” Himiko said as Tenko clung to her, but Tenko would only hold tighter to Himiko’s body. “You’re making me stuffy.”

“Then, a water?” Tenko would ask. “A cold, moist towelette? Just tell me! Yumeno-san!”

“A moist towelette is fine…”

I love you, I love you, I love you.

Tenko’s feelings for Himiko became much deeper than just her chipmunkish looks, much deeper than her drowsy eyes and voice, the cute, slow way she spoke.

One day, when Tenko was in Himiko’s lab, Himiko asked her a question.

“Why do you like me so much…? You’re always following me around, and stuff.”

“Tenko doesn’t like Yumeno-san. Tenko loves Yumeno-san,” she said happily, and held Himiko’s little hands in her bigger ones. “That’s why!” She squeezed. Himiko didn’t squeeze back. She just looked away with a light blush on her cheeks.

“Love… me?”

“Yes! Love!”

“Nyeh…” Himiko still didn’t look at Tenko. “Why, exactly…?”

“Because Yumeno-san is Tenko’s ideal girl! Yumeno-san is small and cute, and sleepy, and can do magic. But most of all…” Tenko paused. She looked at Himiko’s face, and didn’t see just her soft skin, or pink cheeks. She saw the girl that she loved. “Tenko is in love with the heart that Yumeno-san has.”

Himiko looked away. “Weird…” She said, and though her feelings weren’t returned, Tenko smiled as she wrapped her arms around Himiko’s body and nuzzled her chin on top of her head.

I love you, I love you, I love you.

Angie had ensnared Himiko into her cultism. It hurt Tenko to see Himiko in such a dangerous position, hurt Tenko that Himiko wouldn’t listen to her. She doesn’t love you and care about you like I do, Tenko would think to herself, so why, Yumeno-san? Still, Tenko wanted to protect Himiko, needed to protect Himiko. She infiltrated the student council that Angie had put together to watch over Himiko.

Himiko frowned at Tenko. “Leave me alone… you don’t understand what God has planned,” she said. “Angie told me.”

“Yonaga-san is a liar,” Tenko protested. “Yumeno-san, please…”

“You love me, right? You’ll do anything for me?” Himiko asked. The same nasally tone Tenko loved, the same sweet voice. “Then go away.”

But Tenko couldn’t leave her alone. Tenko couldn’t go away. As she watched Himiko walk away from her and to Angie’s side, she thought to herself: I love you, Yumeno-san, that’s why Tenko can’t do what you asked…/i>

After Angie’s death, Tenko volunteered to contact her during the seance, as the medium. It was for Yumeno-san’s sake. Tenko told Himiko how she really felt about her. Express your feelings, she’d said. And always remember that Tenko loves Yumeno-san, she’d said, and Himiko smiled at her. Tenko smiled back, and went underneath the cage, cloth, and statue in position.

It was dark. The music started. Tenko tried to focus, but all she could think about was Himiko. Her face. Her hands. Her mouth, when she smiled, her lips. The way her eyes and nose crinkled when she was happy. Her dimples. Her voice, even when she was annoyed. The way her body was so warm when Tenko hugged her.

Yumeno-san… all I ever wanted...

Tenko felt herself pierced, pierced right through the neck, and it was hot and sharp. Tenko couldn’t even scream for help. Death came for her quick, and as it did, her last thoughts resounded over and over again in her head.

I love you, I love you, I love you.
