Daisy thinks love is despicable and ridiculous. She’s said it over and over again. I never really listened to her. It was just the way Daisy talks about these things.

We’re going back to Deepdean tomorrow, leaving London behind, and, seeing love from the outside, I am beginning to think maybe she was right all along. Daisy is hardly anything like my Daisy right now and I never thought Daisy could be anyone but Daisy. I know how she feels. I get rather ridiculous myself when I know I won’t be seeing Alexander for a while. But Martita probably won’t even write. Why would she? That leaves Daisy with nothing but fantasies.

Just the other day she said she thinks Martita might secretly have sailed over from Portugal on a commandeered ship just like she’d said, even though we know now she’s from England. The more she builds Martita up in her mind like this, the harder it will be to be away from her, or to fall in love with anyone else.

Love is wonderful, when it’s not awful, but seeing my best friend like this makes me think that maybe love really is a little bit despicable, too.
