FIC: Patterns [Chrono Trigger – Lucca / Marle (All Ages)]
Title: Patterns
Fandom: Chrono Trigger
Pairing: Lucca / Marle
Rating: All Ages
Prompt: 016 – Outsider P.O.V. [020 – Remainder]
Word Count: 240
Summary: Robo had it all figured out long before they did.
* * * *
Humans are not unlike machines in that their actions consist of a series of interlocking patterns. By determining those patterns and analyzing them, it is possible to learn the workings of a machine, or of a person, and it is no different for Lucca.
She is my best friend, but that makes her no less human, and it is my experience that humans are not as aware of their own patterns as they wish to be. Perhaps it is because their memories are not exact? I can recall every day of my entire life as a self-aware being, but humans have only general impressions – a whole painting, not individual colors and brushstrokes.
It thus makes sense that I realized Lucca had a different perception of Marle long before she realized it for herself. In looking at, for example, Chrono in a regular conversation, she would look at him long enough to convey her point, then leave it at that. But, in looking at Marle, she would let several seconds pass, and to no visible purpose.
And her body language would change, perhaps imperceptibly. She never adjusted her hair in talking to anybody but Marle, for example. I admit that it took me several adventures to decipher those differences as attraction, but that is what it was.
I considered asking Lucca about it directly, but pattern recognition also means knowing when to exercise discretion in letting events take a positive course.
END.
