* * * *

"I'd confined myself to my chambers," Camilla said, sitting next to Cordelia in front of the hearth after pausing to stoke its embers, "after everything that had happened involving my family – after losing Corrin to the Hoshidans, that is. I felt as though I had no choice but to drown in my despair. As soon as I made that decision, the summoning occurred, and here I sit." She sighed. "Is it the contract that gives me purpose, or did I find that all by myself?"

"I ask myself the same question," Cordelia replied, taking a sip from the cocoa that Camilla had prepared for her, "but not for the same reason. You told me –" She paused to choose her words. "– that one of your retainers is my daughter, but ... I'm a Cordelia who never married. Knowing that at least one world exists where I have a family is –" She closed her eyes. "– it's hard."

"Don't ever tell a Beruka, but Severa – I can call her that here – was always my favorite." Camilla sipped her own cocoa. "She never abandoned me, never doubted me, no matter how bad things became. I would have died fighting the Hoshidans, you know, but she saved me, wouldn't let me go to my death in despair." She had a smile of memory on her face. "Small wonder I loved her."

"What does that mean for the two of us, then?" Cordelia asked, looking down at her feet. "You've already told me how much I remind you of her, but I like to think I'm more than just a substitute for a daughter I've never known."

"You're too insecure, dear," Camilla chided her. "Don't you remember what I told you? Severa always talked about you. Always. She was always comparing herself to you, and, every time she felt she fell short, she blamed herself for letting you down." Another sip of cocoa. "In her mind, she was never good enough, but she became one of the strongest and most competent people I've ever known." She turned to look at Cordelia. "And here you are. Meeting you here has helped me understand why she pushed herself so hard."

"You didn't answer my question, Camilla," Cordelia said softly. "You and I are going be here in the world of Zenith for a good while. I need to know what our relationship is. I just ... can't have anything be vague and indefinite."

"That you're asking me at all tells me that you know why you aren't married in your version of Ylisse," Camilla replied. "Deep in your heart, you weren't looking for a husband, just as I wasn't looking for one in my world." She picked up the black iron poker and scraped at the embers again as she spoke. "One of the hardest things Severa had to do was tell me what was in her heart. As scared as she was of measuring up to you, she was even more scared of rejection." She a gleam of bemusement in her eyes. "And I suspect that's why you're asking me to define things. You're afraid of trying to do so yourself."

"I –" Cordelia seemed embarrassed. "– yes. You're right." She averted her gaze. "And ... what did you tell her when she came to you to confess?"

"I told her the truth. I told her that she was my favorite." Camilla took Cordelia by the hand. "And I asked her what she wanted me to be to her."

"Then, I –" Cordelia looked up at her again. "– Camilla, I think I want you to – to –" Her mouth opened and closed, producing no words. "I don't know if there's really a way to say it. I've never had anyone who's been willing to ... show me the way, perhaps?" Vulnerability showed in her face. "I don't know if I want a lover, a mentor, both, neither. I just know that – that I need."

"I'm right here, then, Cordelia," Camilla replied. "If your mind is made up, all you have to do is cross this short distance between us." She squeezed her hand. "If you're not ready, don't do it. I won't be offended in the least."

"It's –" Cordelia had started thinking aloud. "I've strived for perfection my whole life. You know that about me. But love isn't perfect. It can't be. That's probably why it scares me the way it does." She took a deep breath. "All I ask is that you don't judge me too harshly if I stumble. And –" She stopped saying anything, instead leaning forward and kissing Camilla.

For a long moment, neither of them said a word.

Then, after they separated, Camilla whispered, "The whole point of loving someone is that you don't judge them, dear. And you don't have to be perfect. Just be you, and, so long as we're here together, I'll take the best care of you that I can." Her voice turned husky. "But I'll warn you now: I have quite the appetite. If you linger here, one kiss won't be enough."

"Then ... teach me more," Cordelia replied, a spark in her eyes.

"See? Once you're over that initial wall of doubt –" Camilla ran her fingers through her hair. "– it becomes so much easier to know what you want." The smile on her face acquired a predatory glint. "If you're ready to learn."

The rest of the night left no doubt that Cordelia was ready.

END.
