“Who was that?” Prudence, still half asleep, lifted her head halfway off Violet’s pillow.
“My sister.”
“The one who’s in Syria?”
“The one who’s in prison.”
Pru pushed up on her elbows, sleep crumbling off. Violet put her cell back on bedside table. She was sitting up, still in her negligee and nothing else, a reminder of the heady night they’d had.
“I didn’t know.”
“I didn’t tell you.”
Prudence sat up. The air-co chilled her skin. Or was it something else? “Vi, we’ve been together for fourteen months. I could’ve helped.” I could have avoided saying some dumb shit I’ve said about inmates on the job.
Violet sat still, very still, facing away from her. Pru’d come to know her signals. The conversation was over.
Later in the shower, Pru went through a checklist of things she didn’t know about Violet Holmes. Had she ever had pets? Why didn’t she now? Who first broke her heart? Had she been there when her father died? Did she think about having children? Pru never had. It never occurred to her to wonder what family meant to Vi. Her own was in shambles.
She didn’t mention the sister again. Not over breakfast, and not when they met at work on Monday. It wasn’t the kind of intimacy Violet Holmes wanted from her.
