FIC: Repentance [Fire Emblem Heroes – Fjorm / Laegjarn (All Ages)]

Title: Repentance
Fandom: Fire Emblem Heroes
Pairing: Fjorm / Laegjarn
Rating: All Ages
Prompt: 147 – Cold [190 – Remainder]
Word Count: 800
Summary: As soon as Laegjarn of Múspell is summoned back to life as a Hero of the Order, she hurries to the side of the dying Fjorm of Nifl.

"I'm here." Laegjarn motioned to the two soldiers of Askr guarding the door to be dismissed before she closed it behind her and dropped to one knee beside the bed, the candles around it seeming to flare to life in her presence. "There's nothing to fear from me. Your Summoner brought me here from a reality in which I –" In which I did not die. "– in which I was able to see you again. Can you hear my voice, Fjorm, or ... do I need to be closer to you?"

"I can hear you, Laegjarn," the Princess of Nifl replied, her voice faint, though still present, "but I ... can't see you very well. Come closer." She tilted her head to one side, but her blue eyes seemed as though they had faded to gray, almost empty – still alive, but possessed of very little energy.

Laegjarn positioned herself at the head of the bed, leaning down until Fjorm seemed able to focus upon her. "I shouldn't get too close, but –"

"You can't burn me," Fjorm murmured, a weak smile on her face. "Even now, my magic still cancels yours out." She raised one trembling hand. "Go ahead." And Laegjarn took that hand in both of hers, flinching at the initial chill of the contact, but nodding a confirmation as it almost immediately faded to nothing.

"I'm sorry," Laegjarn said, sighing, "if that means anything at this point. If I'd been seeing everything with clear eyes from the beginning, this might never have happened to you, but ... that's what family loyalty gets you, especially in Múspell." She paused. "But it's not a complete loss. In my world, I was able to find you before you invoked the Rite of Frost, and –" She stopped there, choosing the best way to phrase what she wanted to say next.

"And we lived happily ever after?" Fjorm said. To that, Laegjarn had no reply. "It's all right. If the Laegjarn I knew here had come to the same realization, it might have ended up the same way for the two of us. There's ... no shame in knowing that at least one version of me was able to find peace in your arms."

"I'm only ashamed," Laegjarn replied, "that I didn't make it here in time. Even if I'm not your Laegjarn, that doesn't mean I can't do right by you. But now, it's ... too late." Fjorm nodded, the motion almost imperceptible.
"How long?" She asked the question so softly that her mouth barely moved.

"Not long," Fjorm said. "Days, perhaps." Another weak smile. "But, if you've been summoned, then you're not going back any time soon, are you? I'd very much like it ... if you could come and visit me until ... the time comes."

"I will, Fjorm." She opened her mouth, but did not seem to know what to say.

"Are you ... happy ... with the other me?"

Laegjarn thought about it for a long moment. "Yes. There's still so much rebuilding to do for both our kingdoms, and there's no bringing back all the lives that have been lost, but ... yes. I am. The happiest I've ever been."

"Then that makes me ... happy, too." She took a long, shuddering breath.

"Save your strength, Fjorm." Her voice cracked a little at the edges as she gently squeezed her hand. "You've only got so much of that left, and I don't want you to waste it all on me when there are so many people who love you."

"It's not a waste." She took a second to gather herself. "I've met another Fjorm, too, you know. That one ... came from a reality where she married Prince Alfonse." She looked past Laegjarn, perhaps reflecting on the meeting. "And she told me that she'd met another Fjorm who'd married her Summoner. So many happy endings." Her eyes darkened. "That's ... the only thing that really hurts me. I know I did the right thing. Nifl and Askr are both saved. So why am I not one of those other Fjorms? Why is it their happy ending ... and not mine?" Tears gleamed at the corners of her eyes, threatening to freeze. "It isn't fair, Laegjarn. I accept ... my death, but that ... isn't fair."

"I ... know." Laegjarn choked up, but she swallowed her discomfort. "And that's why I'll be your Laegjarn for as long as I'm here. I'll go back to my Fjorm in due time, but, as long as I've got you, that's the same." She leaned down and kissed Fjorm on her forehead. "I can promise you that much."

"I ... accept." Another pause. "So ... what are you waiting for?"

Laegjarn smiled. "I don't know." And she kissed Fjorm on the lips.

END.

Bittersweet ficlets are my jam! Even canon-blind this was a nice little vignette into the lives of a pair of interesting characters. ;u; Nice work.

(I picked up the habit on LJ and have been repressing it through my tumblr years. Let me know if you prefer no comments. I know some folks are made anxious by them.)

Welp, that was a pairing I never considered while playing but which, um, suddenly appeals to me a lot. Thank you for writing ♥
