“Hey,” a soft voice came from the doorway.
Gail turned around to see Erica and her heart warmed. “Hey yourself.” She leaned on her crutches as she moved closer to Erica.
The younger woman met her halfway and wrapped her arms around Gail’s shoulders, hugging her as close as she could get her. Limited by her need to hold onto the crutches, Gail nuzzled against Erica’s soft, silky hair.
“I was so worried about you.” Erica whispered. “I didn’t think I’d ever get to see you again.”
“Ditto.” Gail replied with an ironic chuckle.
Erica pulled back, looking Gail in the eye. “I can’t even imagine what you went through.”
Gail let her focus wander for a moment, still shaken by her recent ordeal. “I had a lot of time to think. I ran out of wine and was alone with my sober thoughts for the first time in I don’t know how long.”
“Did you think about me?” Erica asked, biting her lip.
“I thought about you all the time.” Gail confessed. “I thought about us a lot too. I thought about the things I’d say to you if I got a second chance. You were never just a relationship of convenience and I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like you were. From the moment I met you, I’ve wanted to be with you in every way. I was afraid that I’d pushed you away and didn’t have the right to ask anything of you.”
“Gail…” Erica leaned her forehead against the older woman’s. She reached up, warm hands cupping the apples of Gail’s cheeks. Gail leaned in and captured her lips, a kiss Gail happily returned with fervor.
They separated after a few moments. “I don’t ever want to lose you again.” Gail said softly, stealing a soft kiss. “I want us to be a team, to be a force. I want to be everything you need from me.”
“Just stay out of elevators, okay?” Erica laughed.
Gail let out a half chuckle, half groan.
“Too soon?” Erica bit her lip self-consciously.
“A little.” Gail smiled earnestly. “It’s just been so long since I’ve felt like I… like I really wanted to let someone in. I think since my son died. But even before that. I don’t like to be vulnerable and I never found someone who was really worth me going all in.
“I’ve always wanted to be all in with you, Erica Dundee, but I wasn’t emotionally ready for a long time. The elevator… curse and blessing that was, gave me a chance to think about what really matters to me.”
Gail leaned more heavily on one of her crutches to be able to reach out and take Erica’s hand. “You matter to me. More than anything else in this world, it’s you. It’s always been you and it will always be you.”
Erica felt tears spring to her eyes. She folded into Gail again, holding her tight. “I didn’t know what I was going to do without you. There’s no one else I want to go through this life with and when I thought you were gone, I felt so empty.”
“I’m here.” Gail slipped her fingers into Erica’s hair, rubbing her head soothingly. “I’m here and I’m not leaving you again, hun.”
