FIC: Stay the Apocalypse [Spectral Force Genesis – Neu / Carnage (Mature)]
Title: Stay the Apocalypse
Fandom: Spectral Force Genesis
Pairing: Neu / Carnage
Rating: Mature
Prompt: Sappho – 02 – Some men say an army of horse
Word Count: 910
Summary: Carnage reflects before the invasion of Maymai.
* * * *
The guardians, selected from the elite and subjected to oaths backed by the strongest of spells, had instructions not to disturb their two generals until the start of operations the next day. They did not question those orders, for the generals in question had brought them victory in their quest to expand from a single province to the conquest of all Neverland, and both individuals had high expectations concerning their privacy. Defeat invited scrutiny, but victory? That guaranteed a free hand, not only in the field, but also in the confines of headquarters. Or the confines of a tent overlooking the sea.
Carnage stared up at the ceiling of the tent, considering her options, as she had for all the days leading up to the journey to the sea. Hard to believe that she had once been animated only by her hatred of everything alive, to the point that she seemed to be little more than a ghost herself, but that had changed. Her master had been defeated, and she had been pressed into the service of the Unicorn Flag ... by a young woman who had spared her life, who had offered her a second chance, and who now lay next to her in the cot that they shared. Where had all of that hatred gone? And ... why?
Neu seemed small and fragile, curled up next to Carnage, her breaths soft and regular. And she only called herself Neu around Carnage. To all the others in the army, she had long been the reincarnation of Hiro, the scythe-wielding, blood-and-fire leader they had all wished to have again. Carnage had fought her in that guise, and had found her to be equally as strong and determined as the one she imitated, but ... the real Neu proved to be calm, quiet, unassuming. Humble. She became Hiro because she had to, but she discarded the name and its implications in private, becoming a normal person.
Carnage should have resented that, should have been consumed by the desire to tear that small girl to pieces, to drink her blood and scorn her lies, but ... she did not. At first, she had raged at her, had cursed her name, but Neu had been patient, letting her spend her anger until it left her empty and exhausted, left her wondering how it had been possible for her to be enraged all the time. She had started asking herself what she had been doing all her life, and Neu had continued to be there for her. Hard to recall exactly when she had invited her into her bed, but there she remained.
Outside, the soldiers gathered their supplies, checked their lists, made ready for the landing that Neu had planned for tomorrow. The leaders of Maymai had already fought them at several key points, but had been unable to repel them, and the next day was going to see the Unicorn Flag planted on their shores. Carnage expected to have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Neu in the field, facing down their generals, using her magic to make them yield. She had once longed to be a destroyer, but she had become a conqueror instead. She asked herself again: Where had her old self gone?
Next to her, Neu stirred, snuggling up to her, still asleep, and Carnage absently stroked her hair. Perhaps it had been because they had both been orphans, their parents killed in the succession of conflicts that had led up to the world of smoke and flame they had inherited? They had that in common, the loss and the pain. But it had to be more than that. It might be because Neu had the ability to inspire others, sham though it might be. Or was it as great a sham as all that? Underneath the guise of Hiro, Carnage suspected that her desire to bring peace and order may have become genuine over the years.
Genuine. That seemed to be it. All her life, Carnage had felt empty, and anger had filled the void until her new life under the Unicorn Flag drained it dry. And Neu had been made to live a lie, made to become a person she had never been, but she had found meaning in the lie, had made her own meaning in it, and Carnage had the feeling that she was going to surprise her masters in the end with how strong she had become. Stronger than them. Stronger than anybody else in Neverland. And it was a strength of heart, of soul, rather than of arms – a strength great enough to make Carnage believe.
She had once believed that she would live to see the end of the world, to laugh as it consumed and destroyed everything and everyone around her, but ... the small and fragile girl in her arms, all softness and warmth, had made her believe that it could all be changed, all be saved. In the morning, the ships would be waiting to take them one step closer to remaking the world, and the soldiers would be ready to accept their orders. Carnage had once raged against a Neverland that rotted and resisted, but, thanks to Neu, whom she had come to love, all that was going to blow away.
She had never thought it possible that she could change, but, as Neu lay in her arms, sleeping like a stone, Carnage began to understand what hope was.
END.
