Footsteps. Felicia looked up from the cape she had been trying to stitch up all day to see that Corrin had returned from her visit to Rhajat, her crimson eyes full of happiness, a smile on her face that suggesting she had acquired the answer to her question, prompting Felicia to set down her needle and thread and fold her hands in her lap.

"Lady Corrin –" Felicia paused to correct herself. "– Corrin, I mean, did Rhajat tell you what you needed to know? I mean, you had a look on your face like you had a really big idea when you left this morning, and you headed out of here, so, um, what did she – ?"

"Felicia!" Corrin beamed. "Have you ever wanted to have a baby with me?" The question hovered in the air for a second as Felicia blinked her eyes, trying to process it.

"Oh, um –" Felicia looked from side to side, not meeting the eyes of her wife. "– I, uh – no, not really. I mean, not because it's something I don't want, but it's sort of, um, not possible." She smiled, but her nerves made it seem half-hearted. "Well, I mean, our marriage wasn't supposed to be possible, either, and that happened, but this is a little bit different, since, um, we're both women, and –" The reason for the visit to Rhajat occurred to her. "Wait a minute. Do you mean there's a spell that can ... you know?"

"There is." Corrin had her fists on her hips, pride showing in her face. "Not so much a spell as a ritual, though. Rhajat explained it to me. It's ... long, and it's complicated, but, if it works, at the end of it, you'll be able to carry my child, just like if –" Felicia had a peculiar look on her face. "You're looking at me like my hair's changing colors."

"It's not," Felicia reassured her, "but ... why am I the one getting pregnant here? If we're both girls, does it have to be me? Why can't I do it to you?" She blushed. "Oh. Sorry. That sounds kind of –" She shook her head. "The question still stands, though!"

Corrin blinked. "Honestly, I didn't ask her about that. I just kind of assumed –" Her cheeks turned pink. "– okay, maybe I should have asked about that, but I ... just really, really wanted it to be you. I want you to carry my child." She scratched the back of her head, looking a little embarrassed. "Well, how about this: If we have a second one, I can be the one to carry it. How do you feel about that? It's a good compromise."

"I'm not sure how I feel about the first one!" Felicia tried not to panic, more or less managed to keep it down. "I mean, yes, I love you, and yes, I'd love to have a child with you, I just never figured that'd be a thing that could happen, so I'm still trying to wrap my head around it, and you know that's not one of my strong points, s-so, um –" Corrin had bent down to wrap her up in a hug and pat her back to assuage her doubts. "Oh, c'mon, you can't just squeeze this out of me. I'm going to need some time to think, and –" She could not help but sigh happily into the embrace. "I swear, you always do this."

"I had my doubts, too," Corrin mumbled into her hair before releasing her, "but I just –" She paused to gather her thoughts for a second. "– I felt like there needed to be more to our bond, and that was the thing that was missing. That'll make all of this –" She made a broad gesture to encompass not only the room and the two of them in it, but the entirety of the castle and the kingdom outside it. "– feel just a bit more complete, if that makes any sense. Besides –" She grinned again. "– I've seen you with the other children here. You not being a mother would just be a terrible waste of a talent."

"If you put it that way," Felicia replied, not certain if she had admitted defeat, "I can think about it. Give me a little time." She rose to her feet. "What, um, has to happen in this ritual, anyway? Is it some weird blood sacrifice, lots of people chanting, or – ?"

"Well –" Corrin turned red. "– it's going to be a bit awkward. We're going to have to ... you know, but Rhajat's going to be there to cast the spells, Azura's going to be there singing, and, um –" She took a deep breath, released it. "– I'm not going to lie when I say I've got more than a little stage fright, and I'm guessing you probably do, too."

Felicia flailed. "Corrin, I get a case of knocking knees if I let anybody see me with my hair down, and you're asking me to – !" She shook her head again. "I mean, if it's for you, if you really want this baby, th-then, maybe, maybe, but –" She hugged herself, and Corrin wrapped her arms around her again. "– I'm going to take some convincing. I'm going to take a lot of convincing. And I'm being totally honest with you about that."

Corrin whispered, "Felicia, love, you know me well enough that convincing people is what I do better than anyone." And she planted a kiss on her former maid that made her forget, just for a little while, what she had come to her to propose.

END.
