#143 - Tragedy | Defeated (Elder Scrolls)
Title: Defeated
Fandom: Elder Scrolls Online
Pairing: Queen Ayrenn/f!Vestige
Rating: T, warning for major character death
Prompt: #143 - Tragedy
Word Count: 650
Author's Notes: minor spoilers for the Aldmeri Dominion questline, and The Moonlit Path especially.
Summary: Now, she seemed only a shadow of the proud, regal woman she had grown to admire.
"I have failed the Dominion, as I have failed my soldiers, and I have failed you."
Propped up against a partly shattered rock, Ayrenn looked up to her. And Anlienya had never felt more devoid of life than now, seeing her queen defeated, in both body and spirit. She might as well lie there herself, slowly succumbing to her wounds.
No matter how badly the odds had been stacked against them and their cause, Ayrenn had always been a beacon of hope to those around her, inspiring her soldiers on the field as well as raising the spirits of those wounded during her quest. Now, though, she seemed only a shadow of the proud, regal woman Anlienya had grown to admire.
"My queen..." Hand clasped over her heart, she cast her gaze downwards, unable to meet her gaze. Seeing her like this was only twisting the knife in her heart that she had felt ever since she entered the portal. She knew it was not real, nothing more than a warning, a vision of a future that might come to pass; but the thought alone of the scene before her becoming reality was enough to frighten her to her core.
"Leave-" A fit of coughs cut her off, as Ayrenn hurriedly covered her mouth with her hand. Despite the dim lighting around them, Anlienya could see the splatters of blood on it when she took it away.
Instead of acknowledging her pain, Ayrenn pursed her lips, forming a thin line; she always did when she was displeased, Anlienya had learnt quite some time ago. Yet having that look directed at her was more painful than she would have imagined.
"I. Said. Leave," she repeated, each word forced out more laboured than the last, and small beads of sweat formed over her brows. "Let me die alone, as I should."
Never before had Anlienya defied her orders, never dared to nor seen cause to do. Now, though, rooted on the spot as she was standing over her dying queen, she found this was the one order she could not follow. So she knelt down beside her, and took Ayrenn's blood-stained hand into hers.
Anlienya did not know what to expect when she laced their fingers together; some resistance, be it a stern reprimand or her pulling her hand out of her grasp, but Ayrenn did neither. Wordlessly, she let her head loll to the side, and rest on Anlienya's shoulder.
"I'm tired," she breathed, words coming out slightly slurred.
Not knowing what to say to her, Anlienya lightly squeezed her hand in response. She stayed like this, until Ayrenn's breathing had stopped and her hand had grown cold. Only then she gently untangled their fingers, wiping away tears from her cheeks she had not realised she had shed.
For a fleeting moment, she hesitated. A part of her wanted to stay by her side even now, despite knowing it would only serve to enable this vision becoming real eventually. Her face a few inches away from Ayrenn's, she was tempted to brush her lips across her forehead; meant as a final goodbye, perhaps.
But the moment passed, and, shaking her head, she got up. She would rather they shared a kiss once they had succeeded in weeding out traitors within their alliance, and once they had conquered Cyrodiil, no matter how long that might take.
It would be something to look forward to in dire times like these.
"I cannot let you pass into Aetherius yet, my queen," she vowed, a bitter smile playing around her lips. She cast one final look over her shoulder, as if to remind herself what would be at stake; not that she expected to forget the image of Ayrenn's pale, lifeless body as long as she wandered on Tamriel. Then, she turned, and stepped through the portal to report to Khali what she had seen.
