"I thought that it might be you, Junko," Celeste said, dropping the accent as she used her elbows to prop herself up in her bed, "but I did not have any proof. You made a very good show of pretending to die." She tilted her head to one side. "Why are you here, then? This has a good chance of compromising you and ruining your entire game." No answer from the silhouette that stood before her in the dimness of her room. "If you are here to kill me, that also achieves nothing –" She narrowed her eyes. "– though ... it might be interesting to see you try. I have no intention of being easy prey."
"Seeing all the different ways you try to save yourself before I kill you might be entertaining," said a flat, almost emotionless voice that sounded nothing like the 'Junko' encountered by Celeste and the others at the beginning, "and you seem like a person who takes a long time to die, but I am not here for that." Celeste could almost see her eyes gleaming in the shadows. "And you will not remember anything that happens here tonight, so having you learn the secret here ahead of time means nothing." She had a seat on the bed, adding, a note of playfulness in her words, "Nothing. At. All."
Celeste could feel her heart beating hard in her chest. This Junko had presence, so strong that one could practically hear the wheels clicking and turning in her head as she picked through multiple calculations at the same time, leaving nothing to chance – the opposite of Celeste, if she thought about it, and yet not so different as all that. They both enjoyed playing the game, if only from opposite sides of the same table. So it did not surprise Celeste to have Junko lean forward and crush her lips to hers, to reach down and practically throw the covers from the bed in order to join her beneath them.
No words for a long time after that. Celeste had no issues allowing Junko to take the lead. She seemed to know exactly what she wanted, and she had a perfect grasp of body language, able to guide Celeste without saying a thing, though ... Celeste had no doubt that they were both evaluating each other and their motives, able to maintain a cool distance inside their heads despite having sex at the same time. Impossible to get a good read on Junko, though, since Celeste had never truly encountered her before. The 'Junko' who had died may well have been a dupe, a completely separate person.
Neither of them had a thing for cuddling up after the fact, so Celeste asked, bluntly, as soon as all was done and they lay together in a mess of sheets, "Taking a chance on seeing me one last time before anything happens tomorrow?" That seemed like her best bet, but, to her credit, Junko maintained a straight face, saying nothing, giving no tells that might admit anything she intended to keep to herself. I would hate to play against her, Celeste observed, but, then again, are we not all doing so already? Morbid, perhaps, but true. It was less a game of chance than it was a game of strategy.
"It might not be tomorrow," Junko said after a moment, looking up at the ceiling with her arms crossed behind her head, "but you are going to die next." Celeste blinked, and the mastermind added, her voice changing from flat and neutral to syrupy and child-like, "And I bet you're thinking, no, no, surely not me. But it is. You've waited long enough, and all I have to do is ring a little bell and watch you drool." A smirk, and she chided, adopting a matronly tone, "So I figured I'd stop by and give you a little drive first. You won't be as much fun when you're dead." Not if, but when. Such certainty.
"I see." No sense losing her cool. Junko obviously had a good understanding of her character, so it made no sense to fight it. "Then I will either have to prove you wrong ... or die. Roulette." In spite of herself, in spite of not being in her costume or make-up, she smiled. "There are a million small moves that make up a strategy. You and I know that. But, if you boil it down to fifty-fifty, to win or lose, then it becomes chance. That is how I shall choose to see it." She had to reach down inside herself and find that core of steel she knew was there. "If I lose, you can watch me suffer and die, as you like."
"Oh, I will like," Junko replied, a small spray can – most likely the same knock-out gas that had cost them all so many memories – already in hand, "but this wasn't bad. Shame it'll be gone in a second." A hiss of air, blackness, nothing, and then ... Monokuma making the morning announcement, another day ready to begin ....
END.
