FIC: Solution R [Persona 4 – Naoto / Rise (Mature)]
Title: Solution R
Fandom: Persona 4
Pairing: Naoto / Rise
Rating: Mature
Prompt: 105 – Brilliant
Word Count: 525
Summary: Naoto and Rise discuss a case.
* Notes: Post-canon by several years. Yes, there is a Persona 5 reference in here, but I managed to keep it down to only one.
* * * *
"I love watching you on the job," Rise said from her side of the bed, sleep weighing down her voice, "but don't you think it's about time to give it a rest?" She tilted her head to see Naoto, running one hand through her red hair to make it look less tousled. "It's three o'clock in the morning. Maybe four. I don't know. The numbers are all fuzzy."
"I have a new idea about that lead," Naoto replied, her pen practically flying up and down the legal pad she had in front of her. "You should go back to sleep, Rise."
"Aren't you a romantic?" Rise teased her, having a good stretch. "You take me out to dinner, you show me a good time, you bring me back here and blow my mind –" Naoto paused in her writing. "– and then you snap awake right after midnight like there's something in that head of yours that you just can't let go." She shook her head, leaning on one hand. "So ... can you say what you're working on, or is this one of those cases?"
"It's not the Phantom Thieves case, if that's what you're wondering," Naoto replied, setting aside her notes. "That one's got too many hands on it. This is –" She thought upon her choice of words for a second. "– one of the political cases. You know how those get. Especially the graft cases." She sighed. "It's taken me a while to pick through all the different layers, but I'm pretty sure I've found the thread I need to follow."
"You know, 'motivated' is a good look for you," Rise admitted, "especially right now." Because Naoto was still sitting in bed in her dress shirt and nothing else, given what had happened between them before. "So ... do you think you've got it solved?"
Naoto lay down again, crossing her hands behind her head and looking up at the ceiling as she said, "Just about. The last seventeen scenarios I put together were missing at least one key element." She squinted, perhaps seeing her notes again in her head. "This one's got it, I think. Solutions A through Q didn't have it, but Solution R's got it."
"Not that I should flatter myself, but ... Solution R? R for Rise? Fun coincidence." Rise chuckled. "Should I take the joke one step further and say that I maybe, uh, pounded the solution into you a little while ago?" She raised herself up on her elbows and looked down into the face of her detective. "Because I can do that again. You know, if it helps."
Naoto smiled her rare smile. "You don't have to do that, but yes, it's a fun coincidence." And she raised herself up to give Rise a kiss. "Granted, saying you don't have to do that doesn't mean I don't want you to do that. I think ... I've solved enough of this for now."
"I promise we'll get back to sleep," Rise whispered into her ear before licking the lobe and making her shiver, "in a bit. Let me just tell you a little bedtime story ...."
END.
