Cocoa had learned the ins and outs of serving coffee at Rabbit House, but she had never quite mastered latté art. If she focused, she could manage a good Tippy, but Tippy happened to be a perfect ball of fluff – not exactly a challenge. But she had been practicing, and, since she had come home from university for her holiday, she thought it might be a good opportunity to show off everything that she had learned, since she had picked up a part-time job at the on-campus coffee house during the school year.

Home used to mean going back to her parents, and she had been to visit them on the first day, but she could not pass her entire holiday and not go back to Rabbit House to see all of the friends she had there: Chiya, Midori, Rize, Sharo, Tippy, and Chino.

Except that Chino had managed to become more than a friend.

The thought made Cocoa scrunch up her face as she made drawings in the foam of what she had started calling her practice mug behind the bar. They had been friends almost since she had moved into Rabbit House for her first year of high school, but the years that had intervened since then had gradually changed things between them, and neither of them could decide quite when that had happened. Before Cocoa had gone to university? Before Rize and Sharo had announced that they had started dating?

There had been a kiss. But did they get to call it their first kiss if they had not technically become a couple yet? Cocoa had hoped to ask Chino about that, one day.

The door to Rabbit House opened, and Cocoa looked up. Too soon to be any of the regulars, and, indeed, there stood Chino – almost a head taller than she had been the day Cocoa had first appeared in town, and not far removed from university placement exams herself, but still as quiet and introverted as she had always been.

Until she smiled. And she generally did not smile for anyone but Cocoa, these days.

"I made it," Cocoa said, holding up the mug. "Come and see!"

Chino nodded and came around the bar, looking down into the foam and wrinkling her nose as she said, softly, "What is that supposed to be, anyway?"

"I, um –" Cocoa had been afraid of that outcome. "– I tried to make it look like you, as much as I could. I guess it looks like ... something. Maybe another Tippy."

"No, Tippy's facial features are lined up evenly." She maintained a straight face, as always. "But thank you for making it for me, anyway. And hello. Welcome back."

"Thank you, Chino-chan." And then, no sound in Rabbit House but the small noises made by all of the different appliances behind the bar. "Um. Chino?"

"Hmm?" Normally, Tippy bounded into the room and ended up on top of her head as soon as she came home, but he had apparently left them in peace for the day.

"Do you want to talk ... about – ?" She let the question hang in the air.

"I don't think we have to. It's just nice to have you back." Again, she smiled, and that told Cocoa everything she needed to know without Chino having to say anything.

"It's ... really nice to be back." She took Chino by the hand, and Chino blushed pink, almost to the roots of her waist-length hair, but still did not say anything.

Sometimes, though, the little gestures made all the difference.

END.
