FIC: Mission Home [Final Fantasy Tactics – Agrias / Ovelia (Mature)]
Title: Mission Home
Fandom: Final Fantasy Tactics
Pairing: Agrias / Ovelia
Rating: Mature
Prompt: Sappho – 05 – He seems to me equal to gods that man
Word Count: 755
Summary: Agrias hurries to get back to Ovelia before it is too late.
* Note: This takes a page from a previous story on the same pairing (because I like to explore the idea of the missing Lucavi), but can be read by itself.

The prophecy had come from inside the Stone of Cancer – the voice of Zebbeb, one of the surviving Lucavi. Agrias had picked up the Auracite in order to seal it deep inside a tomb that she and Ramza had discovered in the farthest reaches of the continent, and the voice had said, whispering in her ear like a thousand snakes, "Get thee to the side of thy love the Queen, if thou dost value her life, lest she be a feast for crows and worms before thou meetest her again. Get thee back to Ivalice." And, after a nod from Ramza, she had left immediately, accompanied by her Knights, Alicia and Lavian.
She had little to say to the others on their journey, and they respected her silence as she guided them back to civilization, hoping to get to the capital and sneak into its confines before King Delita had a chance to realize that several of the fugitives he and the Church had been seeking for years had returned to the kingdom. The three of them managed to evade the patrols that had been set at the borders, and they kept to the back roads of the countryside as best they could on their way to the city.
But, in the countryside, there lurked bandits and the monsters that aided them, and a horde of both descended upon Agrias and her Knights as they neared the capital, perhaps mistaking them for easy pickings. They quickly discovered that numbers, no matter how overwhelming, had no value against skill, ability, and experience.
Agrias looked down at one of the bandits, laying at her feet, curled up in a ball, gasping for breath and bleeding her last, but still defiant enough to look up at the Holy Knight and recognize her, saying, "I recognized you too late, but ... aye, 'tis the Blue Witch, the Priest-Killer." She coughed, her eyes starting to glaze up. "Empty of heart, barren of womb, she strikes down all who ... stand ... in her ... way." Dead. Agrias managed to keep her face impassive as she turned from the corpse to Alicia and Lavian.
"We have no more time to waste, so ... let us go," she said, leaving it at that. Alicia nodded once, and Lavian looked at her contemplatively for a second before remounting her Chocobo and taking point as they returned to the roads, the night drawing near.
The landscape around her receded into the background of her mind as she thought, one hand resting on the holy symbol at her throat, I knew from the beginning that one of the sacrifices we made would be any hope of having a good name in this land. No matter what they say of me, no matter what they think, I know what it is right. Empty of heart? No, she had done it all for her sovereign – the woman she had come to love. Barren of womb? No, she had taken oaths of loyalty that placed Ovelia above all possibility of marriage. And now I place myself in danger by coming back to you.
That night, as they stopped to rest and she sat with her back to a tree, dozing, she dreamed of a garden, and of her Queen standing there, waiting. Waiting? For whom? The glint of light on metal, of a dagger concealed in the folds of her cloak. Ovelia turned her eyes to the arch that separated the garden from the other grounds of the castle. A blade? No! He will kill you! He? How did she know it might be – ? Am I too late? Or is this yet to happen? A sick feeling. Please, Ovelia. Wait. Not yet. You have to —
Agrias awoke with a start. Ignorance ... is truly bliss. I should never have touched the Stone of Cancer. She forced herself to take a deep breath. And yet ... there is nothing else I could have done. No matter where she is, no matter what she has yet to do, I must go to her. That is the only choice there is. She thought of her oaths, and she shook her head. No. This is not loyalty. This is ... love. My love, selfish and simple. But she resolved to judge herself for it only after she had done what she had to do.
Only a little time passed before she, Alicia, and Lavian rode again, hoping that they could get to the castle before the prophecy came to pass.
END.
