The demons spoke the same language as the humans, but their intonation was never quite the same. There was something lascivious and thick about the way they pronounced their consonants. All Ning Yingying had to do to recognize she was in danger was to hear the dip in the first syllable, spoken in a low voice, soft like silk. It sent a shiver down her spine, a current of sensation pooling at her lower dantian.
"What's a girl like you doing in a place like this?"
She drew a long breath and suppressed the urge to reach for her sword. The borderlands tavern was full, smoky, dark. She didn't want to start a fight. "Looking for you, Sha-guniang."
She turned, and the demoness was right there, beautiful eyes with a tint of red burning right through her. Suddenly, she understood Liu-shijie a little better. Anybody who met that gaze would feel a little weak in the knees. She let the breath out. "I have a message from my shijie. It's, uh..."
"Spit it out." Sha Hualing was beginning to look bored, so Ning Yingying screwed up her courage and shoved her face forward, pressing her lips to Sha Hualing's.
After a moment of surprised stillness, the demoness grabbed her face and kissed her back until her head was spinning.
"Come to my room upstairs," Sha Hualing purred once they disconnected. "I have a message to send back."
Yingying's knees had turned to jelly, but she nodded obediently. Anything for Shijie.
