She wanted to take it back as soon as the words were out of her mouth. She was just being defensive and running her mouth like usual. It didn't mean anything. Morgana looked back at her with her eyes widened in shock and mouth open, as though she'd been slapped.
Rowena stepped forward, raising and lowering her arms in an aborted attempt to, well, she wasn't sure. “I...”
“Don't.” Morgana stepped back. Her voice was watery, but her expression hardened. “You've been very clear about your feelings.”
“That's not what...” Rowena knew she couldn't explain this away. Any excuses or explanations died on her tongue. “But I love you.” For once, she knew she actually meant it.
“That's not enough.” Morgana turned and left with her head held high, even if a tear escaped as she did so.
Rowena took a step forward and stopped, knowing this time, she couldn't follow.
