The Blush of My Heart:

Barriss tries not to stare mulishly at her data pad. She glances up as Gree sets a cup of tea in front of her and then takes the seat across from her with his own cup. She expects him to ask what she’s studying, he usually does. Instead he picks up an earlier conversation and says, “Sometimes you just click with people and maybe that’s what happened with you and Ahsoka?”

“Click?” Barriss sets her data pad down.

Gree shrugs. “You’re about the same age and studying the same things.”

Barriss picks up her tea cup as she considers this. “I had a mission with Knight Skywalker when we were both padawans, maybe that’s why I keep thinking of myself as older than Ahsoka.”

“You’re barely older,” Gree points out. “So you have to decide if your feelings are that she’s your vod’ika or not.”

“I curtsied the first time I met her,” Barriss manages. Somehow she keeps her tea cup in her hand instead of covering her face in embarrassment. She can feel her cheeks flush. “I definitely don’t have sibling like feelings for her.”

“I failed to defend myself the first time I met Howzer. I went flying across the room,” Gree offers.

Barriss shakes her head, then takes a sip of her tea.

“Hey, I recovered and now we’re dating.”

“Our last two mission together, we nearly died,” Barriss stresses. “I begged her to kill me.”

“And she didn’t and you’re both alive.”

Barriss sighs, “She’s going to be an amazing Jedi.”

“So are you,” Gree encourages.

Barriss lays on the mat attempting to catch her breath. She and Ahsoka are done sparring. She’ll get up in a moment. She just needs to bask for a moment. She tilts her head as Ahsoka drops down near her and then snuggles close.

“We’re both all sweaty,” Barriss points out apologetically.

“It’s wonderful,” Ahsoka grins.

It really is. She feels better than she did before they sparred.

“I’m not feeling as stressed about my exams,” Barriss admits.

“You’re going to do great!” Ahsoka encourages.

“I did have Master Unduli and Gree to help me study,” Barriss says.

“And you,” Ahsoka points out. “You have yourself.”

“And myself,” Barriss agrees with a laugh.

Ahsoka scrunches her noise. Barriss tilts her head, tries to look down at her, but the angle is awkward with Ahsoka using the crook of her shoulder as a pillow.

“I meant to tell you how smart you are, but it came out wrong.” Ahsoka grimaces.

“I’ve gotten tongue tied around you too,” Barriss confesses.

Ahsoka sits up and looks down at her, suddenly full of hope with her eyes gone big. “Really?”

Barriss nods.

Ahsoka grins. Then she darts in and kisses Barriss’ cheek, before she rolls to her feet and tugs on Barriss’ hand. “Come on, now that you’re not worried about your exam we can get food and study and the facts will stay in your head.”

Barriss laughs and springs lightly to her feet. “Is this you offering to help me study?”

Ahsoka threads their fingers together and squeezes her hand. “We’re Jedi, of course our first date is going to be a study date.”

“Of course,” Barriss agrees.
