Challenge 306 - Game of Thrones - Lessons from Roses
Title: Lessons from Roses
Fandom: Game of Thrones
Pairing: Margaery Tyrell/Sansa Stark
Rating: G
Word Count: 267
Prompt: 306 - nurture
Summary: Margaery and Sansa take a walk around the gardens
Margaery carefully plucked a rose from a bush along the path and handed it to Sansa.
“It's lovely,” said Sansa, bringing it to her nose to inhale the fragrance.
Margaery smiled at her and looped her arm through Sansa's as she continued their tour of the gardens.
“At birth, every child in Highgarden is gifted with their very own rose seedling. It is planted by the parents, of course, but as soon as they are able, each child is left to nurture their own plant. We are taught, to water, to weed, to give nourishment to the soil, and always to be careful of thorns. A lesson that can serve one well in places besides the gardens,” Margaery said.
“So I've learned,” replied Sansa.
“There are festivals connected to the roses- one when the first buds begin to appear and another when the gardens are in full flower. There's even a courtship ritual that involves roses.”
Sansa seemed to stumble in her walk and Margaery slipped an arm around her.
“When a citizen of Highgarden finds a person they are interested in, they will often give their intended a gift of a rose from their garden.”
“What did Joffrey say?”
“What did Joffrey say, when?”
“When you gave him the rose.”
Margaery stopped in the middle of the path and turned to face Sansa. “I didn't give him the rose.” She looked pointedly at the rose in Sansa's hand.
“Oh. I-”
“The other thing that tending the roses teaches us is that it may take a while, but given enough time and attention, lovely things can grow.”
