No activity from the ruins. Only silence. No Heroes to be called – not on that day. And yet Nephenee sat on one of the benches facing the site, her lance across her knees, her green eyes turned down to the blue-green slivers of her reflection cast by all the ribbons of water running along the channels made by the carvings in the stone at her feet.

"S'been 'nother year," she said to no one, "an' you're still not here." A white bird had a seat upon the megalith at the center of the ruins, pausing to clean its feathers before returning to flight. "Prob'ly beside yourself lookin' for me back home. Ain't that right?" The hints of green grass interspersed among the channels swayed in the breeze. "It's ... hard. Not gonna lie 'bout that. Be a lot easier if I had ya here, y'know." She sighed, resting one hand on her chest, remembering the ring she had on a cord there.

"Hey, there." Soleil. "I, uh –" She fidgeted. "I'm not here to ... act like I normally do, okay? I figured I'd, um –" She took a seat next to Nephenee, taking care to leave a fair distance between them. "I didn't want you to be alone, all right? I know this is a hard day for you."

"Always is," Nephenee admitted. "S'okay, Soleil. I appreciate the thought." They sat together in silence for a long moment before she added, "Think she'll ever come?"

"Ophelia came, didn't she? If I can get her back, I'm sure you'll get Heather back, too." Again, she fidgeted. "I just ... wish I knew how much longer you had to wait."

"S'long as it takes." Conviction in her voice. "I'll keep comin' out here 'til she shows, even if I'm an old maid by the time it happens." Another sigh. "Hope it's not that long."

"I mean, you could ask the Summoner to send you back, but –" A bitter laugh. "– if there's one thing all of us have in common, it's that we know we're not going to leave until the job's done, and there's still a lot of job left to do, isn't there?" Another long moment of silence. "Don't think I'm being forward or anything, but ... want a hug?"

"If you're offerin', I'll take half of one," Nephenee murmured, and Soleil looped one arm around her shoulders, sitting with her like that for a little while. "Wanna go?"

"Ah, it's a nice day. I'm in no hurry to go if you'd rather stay here." Soleil released her. "I just wanted you to know it's okay to feel lonely. You've got all of us to care about you."

"Thank ya, all of ya. Ya don't have t'do this, but I 'ppreciate it." Nephenee looked up again, staring at the megalith before rising to her feet. "What's dinner t'night?"

"I think we're in for another attempt at squash casserole. Third time's supposed to be the charm." Soleil shook her head. "But at least you'll be among friends. Right?"

"Right." Nephenee balanced her lance on her right shoulder. "Let's go do that."

"Yeah, it'll keep you occupied." But, as Soleil followed Nephenee, she thought, I know you'll stay. We'll all stay for as long as it takes. But – She did not let her companion see the worry on her face. – it's a lot easier to take if you've got someone you love with you.

END.
