"I thought that I only had to build a fire and bake this, but –" Aife grimaced, setting her package on the table in front of Hikaru. "– I discovered that making chocolate has all kinds of steps, and I have no desire to do it again. So. You can take it. Please."
"You're making this seem like a present you'd rather not give me," Hikaru said, her face deadpan behind her mask, "but I'll happily take it in the spirit of the holiday." She opened the package, unwrapping it to reveal a bundle of heart-shaped chocolates tied up in a red ribbon. "I don't see why you're disgusted by this. You could paint a picture of it."
"If I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right," Aife replied, but her face softened. "So ... you like it? It's not too much? I really did put far too much effort into it."
Hikaru laughed. "Yes. I like it. You can relax." All the air seemed to leave Aife, and she slumped into one of the chairs at the table, resting her forehead on the thick oak. "You ... didn't have to get me anything, Aife. I mean, I didn't really get you anything."
"You've been on a mission," Aife said, her voice muffled by the table. "I've been stuck here with nothing to do. There hasn't even been any construction, and that's a first."
"You're ... right." Hikaru blinked. "Every day I've been here, the workers have always been building something, and now, they aren't. I guess that's why the morning seemed so quiet." She sat down across from Aife. "Thank you, though. Really. I mean it."
"You're welcome. I wouldn't be much of a girlfriend if I didn't take the time to try and spoil you every once in a while, even if it's just something small like a bunch of chocolates." Aife sighed. "I'm still getting used to the whole 'girlfriend' thing, really."
"To be fair, that's what happens when you're lived with the whole ideal of being one woman against the world. That's your story, isn't it?" Hikaru laughed again. "And here I am, a mere ninja – and not a real ninja, but a trainee. How did you find me again?"
Aife raised a brow. "Did I already tell the joke about you not being a very good ninja because I had no trouble seeing you? I think that was one of the first things I told you."
"It was, but it's a valid point." Hikaru pondered for a long moment, making one of the small chocolates dance across her knuckles in a trick she normally reserved for one of her knives. "Am I still a trainee after being here in this realm for three years?"
"Eh, I don't think so. I've seen you at work. There's a reason they rely on you." Aife looked disgusted again. "Meanwhile, I'm still just 'the girl from the village'."
"Nonsense. You're still a hero, even if you're a humble one. 'They also serve who stand at the ready,' goes the saying. Besides –" She averted her gaze for a second. "– if you're safe here, then I don't have to worry about you while I'm gone. That's not so bad."
"Coming from you, that's oddly touching." They shared a laugh. "In all seriousness, though, whatever you want to call the holiday, I'm glad we're both home for it."
Hikaru popped the chocolate into her mouth, pausing to let it melt on her tongue before swallowing it. "You really did a very good job on these, Aife. They're excellent."
"If that's so, then –" Aife leaned across the table to kiss Hikaru, and that was that.
END.
