( challenge 265 ) clumsy kisses r good enough ( magical girl raising project )
Title: clumsy kisses r good enough
Fandom: Magical Girl Raising Project (Black)
Pairing: Kana/Mepis Pheles
Rating: T
Prompt: 265 - girlfriend
Word Count: 805
Summary: "Mepis. Are we girlfriends?"
Kana has a question for Mepis.
Warnings: Lesbophobic slurs/language used by a closeted teenager.
Notes: Yes, the title is a reference to the Cyndi Lauper song from The Goonies.
“Mepis. Are we girlfriends?”
The can in Mepis’ hands nearly exploded from how hard she clenched down, and Mepis’ neck creaked when she looked up at Kana from her bedroom floor. Kana was on the bed, undoing the knots in her hair that Mepis had fashioned there, letting it all down her back.
“Are we what?!” Mepis asked, shuffling up to her knees while placing her crushed can down to lean her elbow onto the bed instead. “Oh, fuck no. Don’t tell me Lillian’s gone and put weird, fucked up thoughts into that empty head of yours with her lesbo manga. You’re too pure!”
Kana didn’t particularly understand that ‘pure’ comment from Mepis. She ran her fingers through her long strands of hair, occasionally getting stuck on a tangle before she combed it into submission.
“Not Lillian. Adelheid,” Kana corrected her. “She asked the other day in class if we were ‘girlfriends.’ From Lillian’s ‘lesbo’ manga, I’ve deducted that this means two girls who have decided to pursue romantic feelings for each other.”
Mepis’ cheeks blistered red on pale skin. She shoved her face into the sheets and groaned loudly.
“Adelheid, what the fuck! I’ll kill you, bitch!” She pounded her fist onto the sheets, though to no avail, as her fist just sprang back at her. “No! We’re not!”
This confused Kana even more. “We’re not?” She asked. “But we’ve even ki—”
Mepis’ head shot back up in record time. Even the tail on the back of her head stuck up, like it was angry. “Don’t say it! Don’t fuckin’ say it!”
For some reason, Kana felt a strange ache inside of her. Mepis denied that they were girlfriends. That was fine. But she also denied that they’d even shared kisses. It’d been Mepis’ idea to kiss Kana, and yet she didn’t want to talk about what had happened… Kana understood what it meant to be embarrassed (albeit, not personally), but it seemed a little inconsiderate on Mepis’ end.
“Oh,” was all that Kana said in the end.
A moment of silence passed them by before Mepis looked up from where her face had previously been impaled in the sheets. Her feathered eyebrows were creased inwards, and her cheeks were still red as could be. She’s avoiding eye contact with me, Kana privately noted.
“I mean… I’m not… gay,” Mepis mumbled. “I was fucked up on soda when I kissed you, okay? I just wanted to see what all the buzz was about when it came to how Lillian squeals and moans over her stupid manga.”
“Gay?” Kana asked. She nodded then, even though what Mepis said was clearly a lie. From what Kana could understand, it was still considered ‘taboo’ to some people. “Same-gender attraction.”
“Oh my god, I am not explaining to you what ‘gay’ is,” Mepis groaned, dragging her fingers down her face. She paused halfway down her face, and then peeked at Kana through the cracks in her fingers. “Kana.”
Kana had been playing with her hair idly until then. She stopped when Mepis spoke her name, lowering her hand down to the bed.
“Yes?”
They looked at each other for a moment before Mepis took it upon herself to lift herself up and onto the bed. She sat next to Kana awkwardly, turning to her.
“You kiss me this time,” Mepis muttered. Kana could barely hear her.
Kana’s heart ached again, but for a different reason. It was as if a thousand butterflies had just exploded in her stomach. Even Kana could feel the heat in her face rise a little in response. She nodded silently.
Kana reached out to take Mepis’ cheek in her hand, as she’d seen in Lillian’s manga countless times before. Mepis didn’t resist or pull away, but she did gulp, looking at Kana with a somewhat desperate look on her face.
“C— c’mon, already,” Mepis urged, and so Kana leaned in and brushed her pale lips against Mepis’ dark red ones.
It was feather-light and barely there until Mepis deepened the kiss for just a fraction of a second. Kana tried to return Mepis’ passion. Their teeth bumped together, and Mepis might’ve bitten her before she pulled away.
“...”
Kana’s face was very sweaty. Still though, she reached out for Mepis’ hand, placing her fingers over Mepis’.
“Are we girlfriends now?” She asked earnestly. “And are you gay?”
“No,” Mepis said with a stubborn frown. But still, she didn’t move her hand away from Kana’s. “And, ugh — maybe. No! … Yes.”
Kana couldn’t help but smile. She felt so warm inside, so… happy, even despite Mepis’ resistance. When Mepis saw this, her irritated, embarrassed expression turned to a small smile.
“You suck,” Mepis said. “And I like you a lot, okay? I’m just not ready to be girlfriends.”
That was good enough for Kana.
