[258] Girls and Pedestals (Original)

Title: Girls and Pedestals
Fandom: Original
Pairing: Phyllida Francis/Violet Holmes
Rating: G
Prompt: 258 Control
Word Count: 180
Notes: Set during the college years in the late 90s/early 2000s.

"She's not perfect." Jane spat the comment out of the corner of her mouth, like a cherry seed. "She just works very hard to make it look that way. You know that, right?"

"I don't care," Phyllida replied, her face still buried in her pillow. The two of them had spent countless evenings like this, with a cassette player or crackling radio on in the background, pretending to study while Phyl talked about girls (sometimes boys) and Jane talked about... plants, or unsolved murders, or the upcoming exams. "She's just so... ugh! You can't understand. You don't care about dating."

"I suppose I don't," said Jane, shrugging. "I just don't want you chasing clouds."

It was beyond that, and Phyllida knew it. She had to have Violet Holmes. Perspective might come some day, but it was still too far away to even grasp.

Violet, always in control. Violet, with her perfectly pencilled eyebrows and flawless cuticles. Violet, who smiled gently and never let up an inch.

Phyllida wanted to drape her mess all over her and finally be at peace.
