Kitty's hands were already fists when she sprang up out of her bed. Rachel exclaimed in surprise and shot up to the roof. Her girlfriend glowered at her from below. "You could've woke me up," she snapped.

"I did." Rachel grinned.

"Without all that or, well, before all that. What the Hell were you doing anyway?" she demanded. "Staring at me like that?"

"Watching you sleep." Rachel smiled.

"Ray," Kitty's voice gentled, "we've been through this. I'm not gonna just disappear on you. I'm still gonna be here whenever you wake up and when I wake up. I'm not going anywhere."

"I know that," Rachel said, beginning to float down to her. "Believe it or not, me enjoying watching you sleep has nothing to do with the past -- er, future." She shrugged. "Your future, my past. It's confusing," she admitted, sighing and hanging her beautiful head. "I know. But I promise I wasn't freaking out or anything," she added before looking back down into Kitty's upturned face.

Kitty eyed her. "Then why do you look like you're seeking permission for something?"

"I'm not. I just want you to know," she shrugged, "I'm good. Really, I'm good. I had good intentions for waking you up, but when I came in here and you were sleeping so peacefully . . . " Her voice trailed off as she tried to find the words to describe how she had felt. She certainly hadn't wanted to wake her, that was for sure. She finally shrugged and opted for, "I just didn't have the heart to wake you. It's not like we ever really get to rest up."

"You're right." Kitty sighed and dropped her gaze to her feet. "We don't." Her bare toes wiggled up at them. "A day off for a X-Man is unheard of. It used to happen really rarely when I first joined, but nowadays, it's pretty much impossible."

Rachel lowered onto the bed beside her. "You taught me long ago nothing's impossible, Ka--"

"See?" Kitty said, swiftly looking up. "You were thinking about the past.

"The past, the future, everything," Rachel admitted, "but not in the way you think." She gazed into her lover's big, brown eyes. "Kitty, you've always been beautiful, but it's very rare that I get the chance to just admire your beauty. That's what I was doing. That's why I didn't wake you. You looked so peaceful, so beautiful, I wanted to just stay here and watch you sleep."

"That's not creepy at all," Kitty chastised, but she was grinning.

Rachel grabbed a pillow and threw it at her. Kitty deftly caught it even as Ray told her, "I wasn't trying to be creepy."

"You weren't," she admitted. "You were just . . . " She shrugged. "Being sweet. But I'd rather be awake for you to be sweet to."

"Would you?" Rachel's grin grew.

"Yeah, I would." Kitty's eyes sparkled. She was tempted to pull her close, but she waited and let Rachel pull her close instead a mere heartbeat later.

Rachel drew her into her arms, held her close, and kissed her lips. "It is better having you awake, I guess," she said, wrinkling her nose at her.

"You damn straight it's better having me awake! I can't do this if I'm asleep!" Kitty pounced, pressing Rachel down into the soft covers of her bed. She pressed her lips back to hers, but this time, she didn't let up on the kiss. Instead her tongue dove deep into her mouth and her legs twisted around hers, pinning her to the bed in such a way that Rachel wouldn't have been able to get up out from underneath her even if she had wanted to -- which, of course, she didn't.

They kissed for a long while before Kitty finally lifted her head. She had long ago mastered the art of holding her breath with her ninja training, but Rachel was gasping for air. "You know what?" she asked, her eyes dancing with merriment.

"What?" Rachel gasped.

"I just decided something. An executive decision, if you will." There had to be some bonuses to being the leader now, she assured herself, and one of those was surely getting to decide to spend more time with the woman she loved. She could only hope that no one decided to try to take over the world today, but she didn't voice that concern. She'd worry about it later if, and when, it happened. No X-Man could ever really take a day off any more, after all, but she could certainly try. "I'm not going into the office today."

"You're not?" Rachel pretended to try to sit up and was rewarded with Kitty clasping her wrists and pressing her back against the bed.

"Nope. And neither are you."

"Yes, ma'am, Miss Headmistress Pryde."

"You like that idea, don't you?"

"Yeah. I do." Rachel beamed up at her. Running a school together beat the mess out of always running from the Hounds and trying to squeak out an existence in a severe dystopia, after all. Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden, sharp Clicking sound and the cold feeling of metal surrounding her wrist. Her eyebrows shot up. "What are you doing?!"

"Making sure," Kitty answered, clicking the other handcuff closed around her own wrist, "that we stay together today even if we do end up leaving my room. Not," she added, "that I have any intention of going anywhere."

Rachel didn't point out that she had merely to phase or she herself to use her telekinesis to escape the handcuffs. Instead she flashed her an even brighter smile at the knowledge that Kitty no sooner wanted them to part today than she did. "Good, because I wasn't letting you go anywhere."

"That sounds like a challenge."

"Oh, it is, Headmistress Pryde, it is." Both women erupted into squeals of giggles as Rachel threw Kitty onto her back and rolled on top of her. Their laughter was only silenced by their kissing.

The End
