[Janelle Monae Lyrics] Prompt 3 - Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better

Title: One new message
Fandom: Original story
Characters/Pairings: Alexandra/Linda
Rating: Gen
Words: 628
Prompt: Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better

Notes: This is the 6th story in the series.
Summary: Think carefully before not sending a message.

The phone chimed, a tone that Alex had set for Linda's messages. That little noise distracted her from her paperwork.

It was better to let some time pass, she told herself, if only because there was the report to finish before the lunch break. Besides, answering right away would have made her look desperate, and just straight out obsessed.

At the third failed attempt to concentrate back on her work, Alex fished the phone out of her pocket and unlocked it, cursing her curiosity and impatience under her breath.

When she finally saw the message, it just said How are you doing?

Against her own better judgment, she replied right away: Well, but now I'm at work.

She had almost put the phone away, the ringtone played again.

Just put it away, Alex told herself, the answer she had just given was perfect. Well, okay, maybe she should have added a "Very busy right now", but that was it. If she replied now, not only it would have given Linda an excuse to keep texting, but also seemed pathetic and needy.

Besides, maybe all Linda had replied was "ok", or something that insignificant.

But what if she had invited her to go drink something after work, or even to a date later in the week? Well, in that case it could have waited until lunch, as simple as that.

With a sigh, Alex opened the drawer of her desk, threw the phone in and slammed it closed. She then dug the small key she kept in the pen holder and locked the drawer, just to be safe.

To be even more safe, she stood up and went to the bathroom. She needed to wash her face, and to be far away from her phone for a few minutes.

Five minutes later, after getting out of the bathroom and heading to the vending machine to get a snack, Alex managed to calm down. Not really, her heart was still beating faster than it should have, but her mind was clearer.

Now she could fully concentrate on just how ridiculous she felt, for having felt so anxious about a stupid message from Linda. Had she regressed to high school, when getting a message and answering quickly was basically her favorite sport?

It seemed so. And what was more embarrassing was that it had been about Linda, of all people. They had been going out together for just half a dozen weeks now, pizza and sex three times, and yet she already felt like that about a simple four words message from her.

So yeah, she had not just gone back to her high school years, she had gone back to her old hormonal teenage self. Even worse than she had imagined.

But at the same time, maybe it was just that right in that moment she would have rather been chatting with Linda than focus on paperwork - then again, watching paint dry would have been more appealing than paperwork.

After finishing her packet of chips, and managing to get as calm as she could, she thought the whole thing through another time, an issue still remained: she had overreacted way too much because of a message from Linda. Had it been pops, grandma or even Paul writing, she wouldn't have felt so anxious.

She threw the empty bag away, wiped her hands with a paper handkerchief, and wondered if she could have gone back to her paperwork right now - she was more calm, but her head was still a mess.

Well, she could have tried, she thought as she walked back to the office. Finding out whether she would have been able to do that right now was going to be an interesting test in and of itself.
