Summary: The first Valentine's day is always the most difficult.

"So, how was your day?" Alex asked while pouring herself half a glass of wine. She did so slowly, emphasizing every movement in the hope Linda would notice that the bottle she had taken out for the evening was one of the fancy ones, and hopefully would have remarked on it.

"Not bad." Linda replied, without even looking up from her dish. The way she wolfed down another mouthful right after she had finished speaking those two words was a sign that she wouldn't have noticed the wine, or if the table was on fire.

Despite the annoyance, Alex decided not to insist too much. She had already gotten used to Linda not being too talkative during dinner, even on special days. But today she didn't want to be too pushy.

After sipping some wine to calm down, Alex got back to her dinner too. As she finished her dish, she wondered if maybe Linda was just ignoring this; after all, she just couldn't see someone like her going along with something like this.

"What do you think of the stew?" Alex tried to ask after some moments.

"It's good!" Linda said, taking a slice of bread to sop up the gravy. "You should make more next weekend."

Well, at least she had noticed it wasn't the usual microwaved stuff. "Yes, happily. If there's anything else you want as first dish or dessert, just tell me." Alex said.

"Sure."

Alex waited for a few seconds to see if Linda was going to finish that sentence, but nothing. She let out a small sigh and got back to her own dish; it was better if she left this for later, maybe in front of the television, or before going to sleep.

A few minutes later, Alex heard the noise of Linda's chair dragging on the floor. She looked up, and saw that finished her dish, and stood with her back straight, almost comically composed. "It was delicious, thanks."

In response, Alex let out a small laugh. "Why did you just thank me?"

"Dunno, it kinda looks like you were hoping for me doing so." She replied, leaning against the back of the chair on her right elbow.

"Well, yeah..." Alex said, not knowing what to reply to that. Linda had a point, after all: she hadn't been very subtle about the dinner being something special, with the fancy wine, and the freshly washed tablecloth, and the candles through the kitchen - not on the table, though, that would have been too on the nose.

"And I really mean it, it was good." Linda added, giving her a smile. She then stuffed her left hand into the pocket of her hoodie, took a small rectangular box out of it and put it on the table, right in front of Alex. "I also wanted to give you this earlier, but I was too hungry and forgot."

The way Linda had quickly done that and said those words had been so out of nowhere and casual, it took Alex a moment to process everything. "Thank you." She replied, picking up the box.

"No need to thank me." Linda said, her smile getting thinner and turning into more of a grin. Now she looked more like herself, Alex thought.

"Alright then. Anyway, what's in there? Don't tell me it's a ring..." Alex said, undoing the thin plastic golden ribbon that kept the box closed.

"Nah." Linda replied, shaking her head.

Alex opened the box; inside, a daisy shaped brooch. And a very cute looking one at that.

"Happy Valentine's day." Linda said, standing up and walking closer to the other's chair.

"Thank you, this is so pretty."

"I knew you'd have liked it." She replied, taking the brooch from the box. Alex stood in complete silence as
Linda pinned it to her shirt.

"I wouldn't have guessed you would give me something like this."

Linda gave her a look with the corner of her eye. "You look more like you're surprised I remembered what day is it at all."

Close enough. "Well, it's just that I didn't think you'd be the type to care for Valentine's day."

"You're right, I'm not. Too shmaltzy for me. But I care about seeing you happy." Linda said, fixing the brooch. She took a couple steps back, and gave a careful look at Alex. "And seeing you look pretty, too." She added, a wide, dumb smile on her face.

"Trying to butter me up?" She replied. She attempted to glower at Linda, but only managed to keep that expression for less than a second before bursting into laughter.
