Note: Minor spoilers for Part 2 if you have not played the game. I managed to get the paired ending for these two, and, as a result of that, I had to write them here as my first F / F pairing for the game. :-)

"I ... can't believe this used to be my room," Annette said, using one foot to push aside a little of the debris. "It's hard to tell by looking at it now, isn't it?" She sighed and shook her head. "What a mess."

"It's nothing we can't clean up," Mercedes said, "but you're right. I guess we might as well make a start of it, right?" She smoothed her dress. "Just like old times?" On the surface, her smile had not changed, but it had a sadness to it that Annette was certain had not been there before the fall of the Monastery.

"All right." And they set to it, picking up the pieces, making stacks, sweeping, checking the furniture to see what was viable and what was not. For a long while, they said very little ... until Mercedes set aside her broom.

"Are we going to talk about it, Annette?" Her smile gradually faded as she spoke. "About what happened ... the last time you and I were both here?"

"About – ?" Annette had no way to stifle a blush. "I, um, didn't think you'd remember?" She caught herself. "No, I'm sorry, that's a lie. I didn't want to bring it up in case, um –" Again, she caught herself. "No, we need to talk about it. It was just a crazy, impulsive thing, it was inappropriate, and I shouldn't have done it, and –" She gritted her teeth. "I'm sorry, Mercedes."

"Sorry?" Mercedes tilted her head. "Why do you feel the need to apologize?"

Annette thought about it for a second. "Maybe because I was so young, and I shouldn't have –" She closed her eyes. "But, at the time, I thought it was –" A sigh. "I didn't think I'd get another chance to ... show what I was feeling."

Mercedes nodded, her face neutral. "You kissed me, Annette, so tell me: What were you feeling?" Her smile returned. "Don't be afraid. I'll never judge you."

"Well, I mean –" Annette could not help but smile herself. "You're my best friend. Writing letters back and forth with you the past five years has been – well, it's really kept me going, but, even before then, I wondered –" She took a deep breath. "– if, maybe, what I was feeling was ... different than that."

"I see." Mercedes had her hands folded in front of her. "You know, it's all right to be nervous. I remember how I felt when I realized that I liked girls, too." That made Annette start. "Is that a surprise to you, Annette?"

"It's – well, no, not really." Annette glanced at what used to be her bed, thought about sitting on it, decided against it. "You always kept it to yourself, but ... not everybody spent as much time around you as I did. I think, maybe, that I was the only person who could catch you looking at other girls." A hint of mischief in her smile. "Let's be honest. I think Dorothea could make anybody look twice, man or woman, and you definitely did."

Mercedes laughed. "I had to look twice! She's beautiful, and –" Her smile had a gleam of conspiracy to it. "– she did take Ingrid under her wings, and you know how protective I am when it comes to my Ingrid." But her face sobered. "But we're not here to talk about Dorothea, you know."

"I-I know." Annette bowed her head. "We're here to talk about what I did, and –" Another deep breath. "I think I'm sorry because I did what I did without really thinking about it, or thinking about what I really wanted, or thinking about what you wanted. It was just ... an awful and selfish act."

"It sounds like you're thinking too much." Mercedes walked up to her. "Or that you've been thinking about it so long that you've taken all the emotions you packed into that one moment and pulled them all apart." She took her hands. "Stop. Think. Put those emotions back together, and tell me what they tell you."

"They, um –" She looked up at Mercedes, her heart racing as she realized how easy it would be to close the distance between their faces. "A-All right. I think I'm in love with you. I ... think I have been for a long time, b-but –" Mercedes reached down to touch her cheek. "– how do you feel, Mercedes?"

"I feel like I'm going to do something just as awful and selfish," Mercedes said immediately before she leaned down and kissed Annette full on the lips. Annette immediately reacted by embracing her tightly in return, and the seconds ticked past very slowly as the two of them relived that past moment.

When Mercedes ended the kiss, she leaned her head down to whisper in her ear, "I love you, too, so ... if you're willing to work on this with me, Annette, I'm more than happy to see what the two of us can build together." They separated. "But I don't think we should tell the others. Not yet."

Annette still seemed breathless. "Even ... the Professor?"

"Knowing her, she knew before you and I did." They both shared a soft laugh at that. "That being said, do you feel better, now that we've cleared the air?"

"I do." Annette nodded. "And we'll talk more about it, but ... we've still got a room to clean, don't we? And then the rest of the Monastery after that!"

"We do," Mercedes admitted, "but I'm glad we got the hard part out of the way." She hugged Annette again. "We'll keep working on it. I promise."

"Yes."

After that, the task of putting the room back together no longer seemed hard.

END.
