She closed her eyes against the tears that welled therein. She wanted to escape the memories, the nightmares. She wanted to leave behind every memory of every man who’d ever touched her, hurt her, berated her, beaten her, raped her . . . The memories and the need to scream welled within her. Tears wept silently down her twisting face.
She came to her without hesitation, her cats meowing loudly as they twisted in and out from around her ankles. Selina wrapped a sheet around Ivy and held her tight. “They’re never going to hurt you again,” she vowed, stroking her hair with a gloved hand. “Never again. I won’t let them.”
Ivy’s green eyes popped open. She looked questioningly at her lover through her tears. She did have so many questions. How did Sel know? How long had she been home? Had she heard her scream? Had she screamed? “S-Sel -- “ Her voice broke as more tears poured down her face. She hated humans, but she didn’t hate this human.
Selina stroked her face, her strong hand feeling reassuring against Ivy’s trembling, poisonous skin. “They’ll never hurt you again,” she spoke once more, her voice as strong as her muscles. “They’ll never touch you again. I won’t let them.”
“Nor will I,” Ivy vowed. She’d been gazing up into Selina’s beautiful, green eyes since awakening, and slowly, she was beginning to feel calmer and stronger. Slowly, her tears were beginning to subside, and the memories and nightmares were going with them. Her lips trembled, though, for she wanted so desperately to ask the other woman to hold her close and never, ever let her go. “I won’t let them touch me or you ever again.”
Selina paused in her strokes. She hadn’t expected the tables to be turned, hadn’t wanted Ivy to ever realize how badly she herself had been hurt. “One day, we’re going to roast that Bat,” Ivy whispered, entwining her own, gloved fingers in Selina’s long, dark hair.
Selina froze. She didn’t move. She didn’t blink. She just stared down at Ivy in shock, wondering how much she knew and how she knew whatever she knew. “You’ve got it too,” Ivy whispered. “PSD.”
“From -- “
“You’ve whimpered his name before. You’ve screamed it. And not in fits of passion.” She cupped her cheek and caressed her softly. “It’s okay,” she assured her. “Any woman would have issues after being used and thrown in jail so many times. Not to mention,” her eyes seemed to somehow bore even deeper into Selina’s, “whatever else he’s done to you.”
“I -- I -- “ It was Selina’s turn to shake, but she stopped moving again when Ivy placed a gloved finger on top of her open lips.
“You don’t have to explain anything. You don’t have to say anything.”
Selina paused. She considered the beautiful woman she held, the lovely temptress who, like herself, was a survivor. She wondered what all she’d undergone, what all had been done to her, but she wasn’t going to ask her. Ivy didn’t need the reminder. She was trying to help her heal, and part of healing was leaving the past where it belonged in the past. “Any other woman,” she said, gently shaking Ivy’s finger off her lips, “would’ve dropped his Bat ass a long time ago.”
“You were lonely,” Ivy observed quietly, still gazing into Sel’s beautiful orbs.
Selina had already promised them both months before that she would never lie to Ivy. She would also never lie to herself about their relationship, everything it meant, and all it could possibly mean if she could only allow herself to let it, allow herself to trust another person after being hurt so many times. “Yes,” she admitted softly, “but not any more.”
She kissed the finger that had just been on her mouth to quiet her. Then she placed her own gloved hand over Ivy’s open mouth and pressed a kiss to the back of her glove. Ivy’s vines slipped around Sel’s body, hugging her. Her babies’ meows had grown less in number, frequency, and volume as they piled into bed with them. Selina slowly and carefully laid down among them, taking Ivy with her. The other woman was still wrapped in the sheet, and that was how Selina kept her, and held her, all night long.
