She trembled in her arms. Ivy held Selina closer while making certain that her bare skin touched her nowhere. She’d added chemicals to her hair recently that kept it from being poisonous, but she still wasn’t satisfied on her research for the toxicity in her own skin. She wasn’t about to test the new products out on Selina either. They both needed each other too much to pull such an unnecessary risk.

“Sh, Sel,” Ivy coaxed her in urgent, soothing whispers. She pressed her masked lips chastely to Selina’s forehead. “Cats, Baby. Sh.”

Selina continued to tremble in her arms. Her face turned as though searching for something, but she didn’t open her eyes yet.

“It’s just me, babe. Sh. You’re okay.” Ivy kissed her again.

“Bruce?” Selina whispered. Yet she shook even harder in Ivy’s embrace. She whimpered like a kitten who’d been hit.

Ivy wrapped herself and her vines around her. She sent other vines shooting across their apartment and to the windows, whose barricades she checked. No damn Bat was getting in here; although, if he did, he’d never make it back out, not after everything he’d done to Selina, all the trauma he’d put her through, all the times he’d hurt her . . .

Selina trembled again and whimpered once more. Ivy hugged her harder and kissed her hair this time. She started alternating between kissing Selina’s long, soft, and dark hair and her trembling flesh, all the while still whispering to her. “Sh. It’s me. It’s okay. Not Bruce. Ivy. It’s Ivy. I’m Ivy.”

With each word she’d spoken, Selina had shaken a little less. Now she held still, her face uplifted once more as though she was searching. “I-Ivy?”

“Yeah, babe. It’s me. Ivy.” She kissed her temple again. “Open your eyes. It’s okay. The big, bad Bat is nowhere near, and he’s never getting his claws on you again any way -- “

Selina’s big, emerald orbs blinked open. “Ivy,” she whispered again. She started to kiss Ivy’s cheek, but Ivy swiftly placed her hand between Selina’s lips and her own flesh. “I don’t know about that yet, Sel. We’ll figure it out. I swear we will. But not tonight.”

Selina settled for kissing Ivy’s green glove. She gazed into her eyes. “I know you will,” she said, and Ivy felt a surge of confidence swell in her heart as Selina spoke with such complete faith. There was clearly no question in her mind that Ivy would do much more than figure out how to touch Selina without killing her. She’d take care of her; she’d take care of them.

Ivy kissed Selina’s forehead, then her lips very, very softly and very, very gently. Gazing solemnly into her eyes, she cupped Selina’s beautiful, tear-streaked face in her gloved hands. “I’ll take care of you,” she vowed. “He’ll never touch you again.”

Selina’s body curled around Ivy’s, but because Ivy was completely clothed except for her face, there was still no deadly skin on skin contact. “I know you will,” Selina agreed, and she purred. Ivy’s vines immediately lifted as did her spirit. Her plants and Selina’s cats came forward, each seeming to be paying intent and happy attention to the sound of Selina’s deep and happy purr.

Ivy beamed and settled in to holding her lover for the night. She had been tense earlier and wide awake long before Selina had ever started trembling and crying in her sleep, which she knew had to be haunted by memories of all the things the terrible Bat had done to her, constantly judging her and treating her as a criminal rather than the woman he was supposed to love. She had been waiting for him to come, to break into their humble home, to somehow show up to take Selina away from her.

But no one was taking Sel away, Ivy vowed, her eyes beginning to drift closed. She wasn’t going to let any one take her or ever hurt her again. Selina clearly wasn’t going to go anywhere away from her of her own choosing, and Ivy wasn’t going to let any one force her to do anything she didn’t want to do. Sel was here -- not just their apartment but in Ivy’s arms of her own free will --, and here, Ivy vowed, she would stay. Here they would both stay -- again, not necessarily in their apartment but in each other’s loving arms.

They were meant to be together. They were meant to heal one another and love each other, and that was exactly what they were going to do. Because of the love they shared, they would protect one another, and nothing would ever come between them again. Confident in that knowledge, Ivy finally let her eyes close and her guard slip. She finally dozed off.

Still gazing down at her, Selina smiled and wiped away the last of her tears. There was no reason to cry. Bruce, a man who had never deserved her and never showed her real love, was her past. This beautiful woman, so confident and so strong, so beautiful in every way, the Goddess’ gift to the world, was her future. Her purr filled the apartment as she held to Ivy and drifted back to sleep, this time to dream good dreams of the world, the future, and all both had to offer when a woman had finally found her correct soul mate.

The End
