Alfonse, Anna, Kiran, and Sharena all waved to Elise as she stood in front of the altar, wishing her nothing but the best for her return to her world after all the months – years, in fact – of service she had rendered to the Order of Heroes in its wars against all of its enemies.
Elise waved back to them, only to close her eyes as white light surrounded her ... and open them again to find herself at home, rather than at Castle Askr. She loosed the breath she had been holding, thinking, I'm back, and that means I can – She looked down at her right hand, and she still had the white flower there that she had plucked from the gardens before her departure. It's not too late, as long as I came back to the same time that I left.
It did not take long to find Effie. She remained where Elise had last seen her: At the training grounds, handily demolishing a pile of straw that had once been a dummy in Hoshidan armor – granted, none of the Nohrians had any animosity left for Hoshido at that point in time, given everything that had happened, but a training dummy was a training dummy, when all was said and done.
"Hello," Effie said, setting aside her lance and dusting off her armor to remove all traces of straw from it. "Hmm? You look a little different. Older."
"Do I? I –" Elise paused. "Well, maybe I do. It's –" She considered whether or not to explain where she had been, decided against it. "Anyway! I got this for you, Effie." She thrust her right hand forward, still holding the flower. "It's a – I-I honestly forget what kind of flower it is, but it doesn't grow anywhere in Nohr or Hoshido. Anywhere! I want you to have it."
"Okay." Effie took the flower and stuck it in her hair with a level of care that belied the animosity that had been on full display at the training grounds. "There." She smiled. "But what's eating you? It wasn't that long ago that we were talking like normal, and then you come back looking at me like you haven't seen me in forever. Did something strange happen to you?"
"It's ... difficult to explain." Elise looked to either side, seeing no one else in the grounds at that moment. "I'm ... going to ask you something that I should have asked you a long time ago. That's why I gave you that flower."
Effie nodded. "All right. Ask me anything you want, Elise."
Elise took a deep breath before saying, "I've ... had a lot of time to think about it, Effie, and ... would you be my girlfriend if I asked you?"
Effie blinked and tilted her head slightly. "I thought I already was?"
Elise opened her mouth, then closed it again, at a loss for words.
Effie smiled, reaching out to grasp her shoulder with one gauntleted hand. "That's why I didn't say anything. Figured you'd want to move at your own pace."
At that, Elise could not help but fume and ball up her hands into fists at her sides as she said, "Effie, that goes a bit beyond being subtle!"
"So you're saying you're ready to make it official, then?" The smile Effie had on her face seemed almost infuriating to Elise. "Because ... I'd like that."
"Why, you – !" Elise immediately stood on her tiptoes to kiss Effie ... on the end of her nose, though she had been aiming for her lips. "Making me wait!"
"You're cute. When you're mad, I mean." Effie thought about that for a second. "Well, all the time, really, but especially when you're mad like this." She looked down at her, her smile disappearing, becoming a hint of vulnerability. "That was a cute kiss, too, but ... let me kiss you the way I want to."
"O-Okay," Elise said softly. She had never seen Effie betray anything but strength, and to see her show weakness made her heart skip a beat.
That same heart started beating much more quickly when Effie wrapped those strong arms around her, locked her lips to hers, and took her breath away.
END.
